This project would not be possible without my teammate’s dedication. I am
extremely happy for their patience and understanding of the project. I must say, I
cooperate better with these group members because they are not idle and they get
work done. I thank them for participating in discussions and doing profound
research on the topics.
Introduction
In the most general sense of the word, trigonometry is the relationship of sides and
angles of triangles and with the relevant functions of any angles. The word
trigonometry comes from the Greek word trigon, which means triangle. The
mathematician Hipparchus is the first human to discover trigonometry.
Trigonometry is used every day but people took little notice of it. Trigonometry is
used in jobs that uses measurements or technology. Trigonometry is important for
shelter thus it is vital to know about it.

Definition of Trigonometry
Trigonometry is the branch of mathematics dealing with the relations of the sides
and angles of triangles and with the relevant functions of any angles.
History of Trigonometry
The term Trigonometry comes from the Greek word trigon, meaning triangle and
the Greek word meatria meaning measurement. However it is not native to Greek
in origin. The mathematics comes from multiple people over a span of thousands
of years and has touched over every major civilization. It is a combination of
geometry, and astronomy and has many practical applications over history.
Trigonometry is a branch of math first created by 2nd century BC by the Greek
mathematician Hipparchus.
Trigonometry started in various job branches such as Navigation, surveying and
astronomy. In all of these job aspects, proper distance between things needed to be
determined. This includes the distance between the earth and the moon, or for
distances that can be measured directly, or the distance form one continent to
another. In all of this trigonometry was applied.
Trigonometric Ratios
There are six trigonometric ratios that are used to find an angle or side of a
triangle. This include:
Sine: Sine of an angle is defined as the ratio of the side opposite (perpendicular
side) to that angle to the hypotenuse.
Formula: Sine = opposite/ hypotenuse
Cosine: Cosine of an angle is defined as the ratio of the side adjacent to that angle
to the hypotenuse.
Formula: Cosine = adjacent/ hypotenuse
Tangent: Tangent of an angle is defined as the ratio of the side opposite to that
angle to the side adjacent to that angle.
Formula: Tangent = adjacent/ opposite
Cosecant: Cosecant is a multiplicative inverse of sine.
Formula: Cosecant = hypotenuse/ opposite
Secant: Secant is a multiplicative inverse of cosine.
Formula: Secant = hypotenuse/ base
Cotangent: Cotangent is the multiplicative inverse of the tangent.
Formula: Cotangent: adjacent/ opposite

Application of Trigonometry
1. Trigonometry can be used to measure the height of a building or mountains.
If you know the angle of elevation you can easily find the height of the
building,
2. Architects use trigonometry to calculate structural load, roof slopes and
ground surfaces.
3. Flight engineers have to take in account their speed, distance, and direction
along with the speed and direction of the wind. The wind plays an important
role in how and when a plane will arrive where ever needed this is solved
using vectors to create a triangle using trigonometry.

Tessane Evans:
I learnt that trigonometry is a branch of mathematics that studies relationships
between the sides and angles of triangles. There are six trigonometric ratios but the
main three are Sine, Cosine and Tangent. The other three trigonometric ratios are
Cotangent, Secant and Cosecant.
Janique Dawkins:
I worked on this project with my group members, they taught me a lot. I learnt a lot
of thing s such as the other trigonometric ratios I did not know about. I knew about
Sine, Cosine and Tangent but now I know about the Cosecant, Secant and
Cotangent and their formulas.
Akayla Allen:
In this project I had learnt about the six trigonometric ratios and their formulas are
Sine- opposite/ hypotenuse, Cosine- adjacent/ opposite, Tangent- adjacent/
opposite, Cotangent- adjacent/ opposite, Secant- hypotenuse/ base, Cosecant-
hypotenuse/ opposite.
Tanesha Johnson:
This project had taught me that there were six trigonometric ratios instead of the
main three. Additionally, I learnt that trigonometry is used in real life to solve
problems such as archeological problems that architects face each day and use
trigonometry to solve them and flight engineers use it to accumulate accurate
statistics.
Henniece Anderson:
Trigonometry has a huge application’s in calculating distances. Trigonometry is
used to set directions such as the north, south, and east and west, it tells you what
direction to take with the compass or angles to get on a straight direction. It’s used
in navigation in order to pinpoint a location. It’s also used to find the distance of
the share from a point in the sea. It’s a study in mathematics that involves the
lengths, heights and angles of the different triangles.
