A computer mouse is a small electronic device that you move around on a desk. It has buttons
(usually two) and a wheel in the middle. You can use a mouse to do many things on a computer.
For example, you can open a file or program by moving the cursor (the arrow on the screen)
over an icon (a small picture) and then clicking (pressing and releasing) the left button.
You can also use a mouse to move around a web page or document, print documents or
pictures, and play games.
In 1964, a man called Douglas Engelbart invented the first computer mouse. It was made of
wood, had only one button, and it was called an 'X-Y position indicator for a display system'. In
1970, another man called Bill English improved the design and made the first mouse with two
buttons. This is similar to the kind of mouse we use today.
Most computer mice are wired, so they have a long cable that you connect to your computer.
However, there are also wireless mice. These don't have a cable - instead, they use radio waves
or infrared light to send signals to your computer.
These days, many people prefer to use a touchpad or trackpad instead of a mouse. These are
flat areas on a laptop that you move your finger across. You can use a single tap as a left click
and a double tap as a right click. You can also use two fingers to scroll up and down or zoom in
and out.
Another popular pointing device is a touchscreen. This is a screen that you can touch with your
finger or a special pen called a stylus. You can use a touchscreen to move around the screen,
select icons, and type on an on-screen keyboard.
Some computers also have a trackball. This is a ball that you roll with your thumb or fingers. A
trackball is useful if you don't have much space on your desk, or if you find it difficult to move a
mouse around.
