Dante is a great poet and his Divine Comedy is widely considered as one of the most
important poems of the Middle Ages. In a time that many literary figures wrote their
writings and poems in Latin, he wrote the Divine Comedy and most of his poems in the
vernacular tongue, because he wanted to ensure that important literary works would be
accessible to the most people.
Dante Alighieri and John Milton, two composers of vernacular epic poems, undoubtedly
hold prominent positions in the literary canons of Italy and England respectively.
In my opinion, Dante’s Comedy is one of the greatest works of literature. The story is
interesting and there are many lessons to learn. The work makes clear that every individual
human being is subject to temptation and sin and every sin will be punished, but it is also
crucial to the story that every human being also is free to alter his or her behavior in order
to avoid punishment and to win the eternal rewards of Paradise.
The poem consists of 3 sections, Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso. His Inferno differs from
its great classical predecessors. For example in Homer’s Odyssey the visit to the land of the
dead occurs in the middle of the poem, but Dante starts his journey by visiting land of the
dead because his poem’s spiritual pattern is not classical but Christian and in this way,
Dante’s method is similar to the Paradise Lost by Milton.
However the Divine Comedy was not well-regarded in past times but now it is considered
as one the greatest literary works that have ever been written because of its spiritual
messages. Like Paradise Lost it shows us the direct path towards salvation and that’s
exactly what modern readers want to know, to experience and to re-examine their life
because they have the ability to stir our souls and teach how to soar high.
