Assignment 2 (V3) Group Case Study Requirement
Assignment 2 (V3) Group Case Study Requirement
Introduction
Actions
This is a group project, which is due in week 11. You will work in the same group as for
Assignment 1.
In this project, you will use the theories we have learnt in this subject to analyse an
established innovation that has become embedded in your industry. The analysis will be
written as a case study report of up to 5,000 words, worth 35 marks, due Monday 16th May
2022 at 6:00 pm AEDT, submitted via Canvas LMS.
This case study will be a retrospective analysis, Therefore, the innovation you select should
be one that has already emerged and had a demonstrated impact on your industry. You
will need to make a case for this being an emerged technology as part of your assignment.
You must select a different innovation from the one you chose for Assignment 1.
In this subject, we consider major theories that seek to explain technological innovation and
its consequences for innovating organisations and industries. Your report will describe how
one or more of the theories we have learned in this subject can explain the emergence and
impact of your innovation.
Learning Outcomes
This assignment addresses the Intended Learning Outcomes 1-5. In particular, upon
completing this assignment you will be able to:
Describe how and why technological innovations emerge, are widely adopted, and
are ultimately superseded
Critique why some technological innovations are more successful than others
Describe the factors that drive the adoption of technological innovations by
individuals, organisations, and society
Describe how to take advantage of opportunities through emerging technologies
and explain the factors that influence how relevant an emerging technology will be
in the long
Team Management
By the end of week 8, each group must upload initial ‘Project Plan’ document on the LMS
Group Page (Files), outlining tasks that each member is expected to perform for Assignment
2. Before submitting Assignment 2 report, each group must update the initial Project Plan to
indicate the actual performance of each member and attach it to the report.
The School of CIS requires each team to rate its members, and each member to self-assess
their participation.
1
Online member rating will be conducted after the project completion. Feedback provided will
remain confidential.
Report (35%)
Your up-to-5,000-word report should include five sections addressing the following
requirements:
1. What is the technological innovation you have selected and how is it used 500 words
in this industry? Provide a historical overview of the innovation and describe (5 marks)
how it emerged.
2. Which one of the following models or aspects of the model best explains the 1,000 words
emergence and impact of the innovation?
(5 marks)
a. Tushman’s Technological-Discontinuity model, OR
b. Christensen’s Disruptive-Innovative theory, OR
c. O’Reilly and Tushman’s Ambidexterity theory, OR
d. Arthur’s (2009) work on combinatorial evolution OR
e. Some other theory or theories that may be relevant.
Explain why it (or aspects of it) helps to explain the emergence/impact of the
innovation.
If you conclude that some other theory is needed, please outline the key problem(s)
the new theory needs to solve. If you feel bold, you would be welcome to advance
your own theory/explanation.
3. Describe any consequences and impact the innovation has had on the industry. 1,000 words
Explain and justify the impact the innovation has had and why it is significant. (5 marks)
How has this innovation changed or disrupted the status quo
for your industry? Support your argument with examples and with reference to the
relevant literature. If the innovation has not had a broader impact, explain why.
4. Describe how the innovation been adopted and appropriated by individuals. 1,000 words
Explain and analyse the impact the innovation has had on society. (10 marks)
Are there particular groups of people who have been affected by changes in the
industry due to the innovation. Support your argument with examples and with
2
reference to the relevant literature.
5. Are there other emerging technologies that have replaced this innovation or could 1,000 words
replace it in the future?
(5 marks)
Analyse and discuss how you think this innovation will evolve in the future, with
reference to your selected theoretical model.
(5 marks)
6. Overall formatting, spelling, grammar, cohesion, quality of writing,
and appropriate use of references
You must include a Reference list at the end of your report. Entries in the
Reference list should be sorted alphabetically by author, then by year of
publication for works by the same author(s). Every idea you borrow from
References:

should be in quotation marks (“…”), should be exact, and where possible
should include the page number from the source.
