WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE EARTH AND THE WORLD?

John 15:19
If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but
I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.

The Beginning
Genesis 1:1-2
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and
empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

Job 2:3
Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him;
he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil. And he still maintains his integrity,
though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason.”

Habakkuk 2:14
For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.

Matthew 6:19
Treasures in Heaven
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves
break in and steal.

Colossians 3:2
Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. 11 Can
both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree
bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water. Two Kinds of
Wisdom13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by
deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish
ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15 Such “wisdom” does not come down
from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where you have envy and selfish
ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is
first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and
sincere. 18 Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.

2 Peter 3:3-7
3 Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their
own evil desires. 4 They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died,
everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” 5 But they deliberately forget that long
ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by
water. 6 By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. 7 By the same word the
present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of
the ungodly.
Revelation 21:1
A New Heaven and a New Earth
Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away,
and there was no longer any sea.

Wickedness in the World

Genesis 6:1-5
1 When human beings began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, 2 the
sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they
chose. 3 Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not contend with[a] humans forever, for they are
mortal[b]; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.”4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those
days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by
them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.5 The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the
human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was
only evil all the time.

Psalm 9:8
He rules the world in righteousness and judges the peoples with equity.

Matthew 13:38
The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the people of the kingdom. The weeds are the
people of the evil one,

1 Samuel 17:46
This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This
very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the
whole world will know that there is a God in Israel.

2 Kings 5:15
Then Naaman and all his attendants went back to the man of God. He stood before him and said, “Now
I know that there is no God in all the world except in Israel. So please accept a gift from your
servant.”

Isaiah 13:11
I will punish the world for its evil, the wicked for their sins. I will put an end to the arrogance of the
haughty and will humble the pride of the ruthless.

Ezekiel 20:31-33
31 When you offer your gifts—the sacrifice of your children in the fire—you continue to defile
yourselves with all your idols to this day. Am I to let you inquire of me, you Israelites? As surely as I
live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I will not let you inquire of me.32 “‘You say, “We want to be like the
nations, like the peoples of the world, who serve wood and stone.” But what you have in mind will
never happen. 33 As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I will reign over you with a mighty
hand and an outstretched arm and with outpoured wrath.

Matthew 4:8
Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and
their splendor.
Matthew 16:26
What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone
give in exchange for their soul?

Matthew 24:14
And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and
then the end will come.

Luke 4:5-7
5The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the
world. 6 And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to
me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you worship me, it will all be yours.”

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.

Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest
by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”

Acts 17:24
“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in
temples built by human hands.

1 Corinthians 2:12
What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may
understand what God has freely given us.

1 Corinthians 11:32
Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not
be finally condemned with the world.

Colossians 2:8
See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on
human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.

Hebrews 11:7
By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By
his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith.

1 John 2:14-16 On Not Loving the World

15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father[a] is
not in them. 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of
life—comes not from the Father but from the world.
1 John 4:5
They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to
them.

1 John 5:19
We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.
