7.15.7 Setting the Valve Lash

Service Tools Used in the Procedure

Tool Number Tool Name Tool Graphic
J-46392 or W904589046300 Engine Barring Tool

Note : Adjust the valve lash when the engine is cold. Wait at least 30 minutes after shutdown, even if the engine
ran for a short time.

WARNING
PERSONAL INJURY
To avoid injury, never remove any engine component while the engine is running.

WARNING
PERSONAL INJURY
To avoid injury from hot surfaces, wear protective gloves, or allow engine to cool before
removing any component.

1. Shut off the engine, apply the parking brake, chock the wheels, and perform any other applicable safety
steps.

CAUTION
ELECTRICAL SHOCK
To avoid injury from electrical shock, use care when connecting battery cables. The magnetic switch
studs are at battery voltage.
2. Disconnect the batteries.
3. Open the hood.
4. If necessary, remove the bumper end(s). Refer to the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) procedures.
Note : Clean the cylinder head cover before removing it.
5. Remove the cylinder head cover (1). Refer to section "Removal of the Cylinder Head Cover" .
6. Remove the inspection cover on the flywheel housing.

7. Install the engine barring tool J-46392 or W904589046300 into the inspection hole on the flywheel housing.
8. Using the barring tool, rotate the crankshaft until cylinder #1 is at the ignition TDC position (all valves are
closed) and cylinder #6 (cylinder #4 on a 4-cylinder engine) is at the valve overlap position (all valves are
open).
9. Check the valves in “Ignition TDC” row shown below.

Engine Cylinder #1
Crankshaft 1 2 3 4 5 6
Position
4-Cylinder Ignition TDC I/E I E - NA NA
Valve Overlap - E I I/E NA NA
6-Cylinder Ignition TDC I/E I E I E -
Valve Overlap - E I E I I/E

10. For each valve in “Ignition TDC”, measure the valve lash with a feeler gauge between the rocker arm and
valve stem (exhaust valve) or valve bridge (intake valve). It should be possible to pull the feeler gauge
through with no more than light resistance. See table below.

Valve Type
Intake 0.30 to 0.60 (0.012 to 0.024 ) 0.40 (0.016)
Exhaust 0.50 to 0.80 (0.020 to 0.032) 0.60 (0.024)

11. If the value measured is within the range, check the next valve while remaining in “Ignition TDC”. If the
value measured is outside the range, adjust the valve lash.
12. If adjustment is needed in “Ignition TDC”, unscrew the locknut (2).

Note : When adjusting the valves, adjust to the exact lash setting. Use the range only for checking the lash.

13. Turn the adjusting screw until the valve lash is correct. Use the settings given in the "Adjust To" column.

Valve Type
Intake 0.30 to 0.60 (0.012 to 0.024 ) 0.40 (0.016)
Exhaust 0.50 to 0.80 (0.020 to 0.032) 0.60 (0.024)

14. Tighten the locknut to 25 N·m (18 lb·ft).

15. Check the valve lash again. Adjust again if necessary.
16. Using the baring tool, rotate the crankshaft until cylinder #6 (cylinder #4 on a 4-cylinder engine) is at the
ignition TDC position (all valves are closed) and cylinder #1 is at the valve overlap position (all valves are
open).
17. Check the valves in the “Valve Overlap” row shown below.

Engine Cylinder #1
Crankshaft 1 2 3 4 5 6
Position
4-Cylinder Ignition TDC I/E I E - NA NA
Valve Overlap - E I I/E NA NA
6-Cylinder Ignition TDC I/E I E I E -
Valve Overlap - E I E I I/E

18. For each valve in “Valve Overlap”, measure the valve lash with a feeler gauge between the rocker arm and
valve stem (exhaust valve) or valve bridge (intake valve).

19. If the value measured is within the range, check the next valve while remaining in “Valve Overlap”. If the
value measured is outside the range, adjust the valve lash.
20. If adjustment is needed in “Valve Overlap”, unscrew the locknut (2).

23. Check the valve lash again. Adjust again if necessary.
24. Install the cylinder head cover. Refer to section "Installation of the Cylinder Head Cover" .
25. Remove the barring tool from the inspection hole in the flywheel housing.
26. Replace the end cover on the inspection hole and tighten the bolts 25 N·m (18 lb·ft).
