Grade 2 Reading Planets

This document provides information about the eight planets in our solar system: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. For each planet there is a brief description of its characteristics such as size, composition, distance from the sun, rotation period, and whether it has moons and rings. Key facts like the length of a year on each planet compared to Earth are also included.

Grade 2 Reading: Planets

This is Mercury, the closest planet to the sun but

it is not the hottest! Mercury is the smallest
planet in our solar system, but it is the fastest!
Mercury is a rocky planet with a solid surface
covered with craters. It doesn’t have any
moons or even an atmosphere! Mercury spins
very slowly, taking 59 Earth days to make one
full rotation.
A year on Mercury lasts 88 days on Earth.
Grade 2 Reading: Planets

This is Venus, the hottest planet in the solar

system! It is the second closest planet to the sun.
It is nearly the same size as Earth!
Venus is a rocky planet that spins differently to
other planets, in the opposite direction. It has
mountains and volcanoes with a thick
atmosphere full of gas. Venus has no moons.
A year on Venus lasts 225 days on Earth.
Grade 2 Reading: Planets

This is Earth, our home! It is special because it is

an ocean planet and can support life. It is the
third closest planet to the sun.
Earth is a rocky planet with an atmosphere that
can keep the planet warm. It is the only planet
in the solar system with one moon.
A year on Earth lasts 365.25 days. We add a day
every four years!
Grade 2 Reading: Planets

This is Mars, also known as the Red Planet! It is

half the size of Earth. It is the fourth planet
closest to the sun.
Mars is a rocky planet with a thin and active
atmosphere. The surface is not active, it looks
like a cold red desert because of the rusty iron
in the ground. It has dead volcanoes. Mars has
two moons.
A year on Mars is 687 days on Earth.
Grade 2 Reading: Planets

This is Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar

system! It can fit 1,300 Earths! It is the fifth planet
from the sun.
Jupiter is a gas giant and has a very thick
atmosphere. It has rings but they are very hard
to see. Jupiter has many big storms like the red
spot that can be seen from space. It also has 79
moons.
A year on Jupiter is 11.8 years on Earth.
Grade 2 Reading: Planets

This is Saturn, well known for its seven beautiful

seeable rings! It is the second largest planet in
the solar system and the sixth planet from the
sun.
Saturn is a gas giant just like Jupiter. It has 53
moons but many more that we still need to
learn about! Saturn has a thick atmosphere,
A year on Saturn is 29 years on Earth.
Grade 2 Reading: Planets

This is Uranus, the second furthest planet from

the sun and the third biggest planet. It is an ice
giant, made up of mostly of ice above a solid
core.
Uranus has a thick atmosphere that gives it the
colour blue! It is the only planet that spins on its
side. Uranus has a set of 13 rings and 27 known
moons.
A year on Uranus is 84 years on Earth.
Grade 2 Reading: Planets

This is Neptune, the planet furthest away from

the sun. It is named after the god of the sea. It is
like Uranus, its neighbour!
Neptune is an ice-giant like Uranus. It has a thick
and windy atmosphere that gives it the colour
blue. Neptune has 13 moons and another one
we must learn more about! It has six rings.
A year on Neptune is 165 years on Earth.
