Assignment 1

This memorandum provides instructions for a chemical thermodynamics assignment with two questions. Question 1 involves estimating the final temperature, work done, and heat transfer for a steam engine process where saturated water vapor expands from 1.2 m3 at 0.3 MPa to 2.4 m3 after heating. Question 2 asks the student to calculate the power produced by a turbine that uses superheated steam initially at 400°C and 3.9 MPa and expands through the turbine to exit saturated at 80 kPa, given specifications of the turbine and steam properties. The assignment is due on March 8, 2024 at 8:00 AM and covers 3 pages total.

CHEMICAL THERMODYNAMICS 2A (CTDCHA2) – 2024

QUESTION 1 [15 MARKS]

A steam engine (which may be modelled as a piston/cylinder) initially operating at 0.3

MPa, has 1.2 m3 of saturated water vapour present in a vertically aligned
piston/cylinder apparatus, this may be referred to as state 1 of the process. At this
state, the piston is stationary on a pair of rubber-stops, and its mass requires a
constant pressure of 0.4 MPa for it to move upwards. Now, a certain amount of heat
is gradually added to the steam, increasing it until it becomes superheated, and the
volume is expanded twice as much (state 2). Estimate the:

a) Final temperature (°C), (8)

b) Amount of work done (kJ) during this process, and (2)
c) Total heat transfer (kJ). (5)

QUESTION 2 [15 MARKS]

A small power plant located in a farm in Mooinooi, North-West province, supplies

electricity to a local platinum and palladium mine, uses superheated steam as the
working fluid. The steam is initially at 400°C and 3.9 MPa and it is throttled through a
valve before it is fed into a turbine. The steam leaves the turbine saturated at 80 kPa.
Furthermore, the inlet and the outlet diameters of the turbine are designed to be 0.3045
m, and 0.8765 m, respectively. If the working fluid has a mass flux of 20 kg/s and the
turbine losses heat at a rate of 10 kJ/s, how much power if produced by the turbine?
