1. PREPARATION AND SETTING OUT
a) The earthwork contractor shall only carry out trimming / excavation works prior to the
soil nail drilling work.
b) Setting out the positioning of soil nail and marked on site at the specified location as
per Consulting Engineer’s Drawings.
c) The installation of soil nail including drilling, installation and stressing shall be carried
out in accordance with the Consulting Engineer’s Specification.
d) Working platform for soil nailing works shall be set up with scaffolding.
e) Scaffolding are placed in a cross position, supported by another unit placed parallel to
the slope.
2. FABRICATION OF SOIL NAIL BAR
a) A high yield deformed steel bar of 25mm diameter shall be used.
b) An approved UPVC pipe centralizers shall be installed 2000mm spacing throughout the
length of the soil nail bar.
3. DRILLING OF BOREHOLE
a) Portable drill rig with temporary staging and drag bit shall be used. Temporary staging
is erected as working platform for portable drilling rig, which can be moved manually.
b) The grid position of soil nail shall be marked on the existing slope once the working
platform has been prepared.
c) Position drilling machine on the setting out point marked on site with specified
inclination and drill 100mm diameter borehole to the depth required.
d) Down the hole hammer shall be used if rock / hard material is encountered.
e) Once the predetermined depth is reached the drill hole shall be flushed clean using
compressed air and drill rods retrieved and drilling rig shall be shifted to the next
location.
f) Upon completion the hole, a T25 high yield deformed steel bar with threaded at the
exposed end and for a sufficient length to facilitate fixing of nuts and shall be inserted
with the pre-drill hole.
g) Upon completion of drilling and installation of reinforcement, grouting has to
commence as soon as possible.
h) Before lowering of the steel bar and grouting, the hole shall be flushed clean by means
of compressed air to remove any standing water.

[email protected] 4. GROUTING OF BOREHOLE
a) Grouting operation shall be in accordance with Section 10.4 BS 8081 (1989).
b) The proportions of grout and the minimum strength of work cubes shall comply with
following requirements: -
Range of water / cement ratio 0.45 cube strength
- 7 days (N / mm²) – 20
- 28 days (N / mm²) – 30
c) The quantities of cement in the mix shall be measured by weight in an approve weight
batching or as per bag.
d) The drill hole shall be grouted on the same day as drilling except where otherwise
agreed by Engineer. Grouting shall be placed by tremie under gravity or very low excess
pressure shall continue until injected grout of the same composition and consistency as
that mixed emerges from the outlet for at least one minute.
e) The frequency of the cube test shall be minimum 1 set per day grouting (minimum six
(6) nos. cubes per set with minimum three (3) nos. tested at age of seven (7) days and
minimum three (3) nos. at age of 28 days). The nos. of tests shall be carried out
according to nos. of per day grouting.
5. SOIL NAIL HEAD CONCRETE PAD
a) Upon to the completion of soil nailing works, a 400mm x 400mm x 200mm thick
concrete pad with reinforcement bar shall be installed inside the slope surface at the
location of each soil nail.
b) A 150mm x 150mm mild steel plate shall be installed and seated perpendicular to soil
nail reinforcement.
c) A hexagonal nut shall be threaded lock to the plate.
d) A 200mm x 200mm x 200mm thick steel mould shall be installed to the slope surface
at the location of each soil nail.
e) Concrete / gunite shall be poured in the steel mould.
f) Steel mould shall be removed once concrete / gunite harden.
