The document provides a solution to designing #3 vertical stirrups for a 20 foot long beam with a 10 inch width and 24 inch depth that carries a 3200 lbs/ft load. Using a concrete compressive strength of 2500 psi and steel yield strength of 20,000 psi, the maximum shear is calculated to be 32,000 lbs at the support and 25,600 lbs at a distance d from the support. The shear stress is calculated to be 107 psi at a distance d from the support, with 55 psi carried by concrete and the remaining 52 psi requiring stirrups. The required stirrup spacing is calculated to be 8.46 inches at the support, tapering to 12 inches maximum further

PROBLEM 18 – 0530: A beam 20 feet long with b = 10" and d = 24" carries a load
of 3200 lbs/ft. Using fc' = 2500 psi and fs = 20,000psi, design
#3 vertical stirrups required for the beam. Base your
computations on the 'Alternate Design' method of approach.

Solution: Maximum end shear = (w1 / 2) = 3200 #/ft × 10' = 32000 lbs.
Shear @ a distance 'd' from support (ACI B.7.2)
= 3200 #/ft × 8 ft = 25600 lbs. (ACI 11.2.1 is similar)
Therefore shear stress 'ѵ' @ a distance 'd' from support is
ѵ = (v / bd) = {(25600) / (10" × 24")} = 107 psi.
Shear stress taken by concrete
ѵc = 1.1 √(fc') = 1.1 √(2500)
= 55 psi (ACI 8.3.1.b)
Remaining shear to be carried by stirrups,
ѵ' = ѵ – ѵc = 107 – 55 = 52 psi.
We have Aѵ ∙ fѵ = ѵ'bs

Send = {(Aѵ ∙ fѵ) / (ѵ'b)} = {(2 × 0.11 in2 × 20,000 psi) / (52 psi × 10")}
= 8.46".
Maximum spacing (ACI B.7.5.4.1) = 0.5 d = 0.5(24") = 12"
Length where stirrups are required (Refer to fig. 3) 46.5" + 24" + half the
difference to GL (ACI B.7.5.5.1) = 46.5" + 24" + {(120 – 70.5) / 2} = 95.3"
Maximum spacing as per ACI B.7.5.5.3
S = {(Aѵ ∙ fy) / (50 bw)} (Aѵ = 50 {(bwS) / (fy)})
Thus S = {(2 × 0.11 × 40,000) / (50" × 10")} = 17.6"
S = {(Aѵ ∙ fѵ) / (ѵ'b)} and {(Aѵ ∙ fѵ) / b} would be a constant.
Thus, S can be rewritten as S = (k / ѵ')
Then, (1 / 2)ѵ' gives 2S1, 3/4 ѵ' yields 4/3 of S1 and so on, where S1 is the
first or end value of S. The spacing is then obtained from the rough curve
as shown in fig. 3.
Thus, let us provide #3 stirrups
1 @ 4, 3 @ 8, 1 @ 11, 5 @ 12 at each end.
Note for curve: Additional points may be obtained at eighths also, if
desired but savings are not often warranted. Note also that full inches are
always used and the first stirrup must be half the first 'S' value.
