Assignment 4
Assignment 4
3. You are given a material and told it is elastically isotropic and exhibits a
yield strength σy of 950 MPa. The material is being used in an application
where it experiences a stress state of
0 0 300
( 0 −400 0 )
300 0 −800
According to the maximum shear stress theory and distortion energy theory,
respectively does the material yield? (10)
4. Determine the octahedral normal and shear stresses for the state of
stress given below:
From the values of the octahedral and normal shear stress can you
comment on the state of stress (Hydrostatic or deviotric)? (10)
5. Infinitesimal elements A, B and C are shown on the figures below for two
different members. Draw each element separately and on an isolated element,
indicate the stress acting on it. For each stress, clearly show its direction and
sense by arrows. Neglect weight of the members. (6)

8. A critical element develops the principal stresses σ1, σ2, σ3 in the ratio 5:2:-
1, i.e. the stresses are 5p, 2p and -p, where p is a parameter. Such loadings
are called radial. If this element is subjected to this loading conditions,
determine the maximum magnitudes of the stresses may reach before yielding
(a) according to Tresca Yield criteria, and (b) according to the von Mises
criteria. Assume that the material yields in tension at 413.4 MPa. (4)

10. A piece of ductile metal is confined on two sides by a rigid die as shown
in the figure below. A uniform compressive stress σz is applied to the surface
of the metal. Assume that there is no friction against the die and also that the
material behaves in an elastic perfect plastic manner with uniaxial yield
strength σ0. Derive an equation for the value of σz necessary to cause yielding
in terms of σ0 and the elastic constants of the material. Employ (a) maximum
shear stress criterion and (b) the octahedral shear stress criterion. (c) For each
yield criterion, what stress is expected to cause yielding of the material is a
ductile case iron with yield stenght of 450 MPa. (10)
(a) Employ the octahedral shear stress criterion and find the largest value of
τxy that can be applied of the factor of safety against yielding must be 2.5. (5)
(b) Is there a large effect of the pressure p on the τxy required to cause yielding?
Briefly discuss the effect of p as to whether the effect is large, small or absent
and explain why. (5)
