STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

 WHAT IS REALISM

BODY

 Realism in education is a philosophical movement that emphasizes the importance of


objective truth and the natural world in learning. Realist educators believe that
knowledge is rooted in the physical world, and that the role of education is to help
students understand and interact with that world in a meaningful way.
 REALISM in the arts, the accurate, detailed, unembellished depiction of nature or of
contemporary life. Realism rejects imaginative idealization in favour of a close
observation of outward appearances. As such, realism in its broad sense
has comprised many artistic currents in different civilizations.
 Realism was not consciously adopted as an aesthetic program until the mid-19th
century in France, however. Indeed, realism may be viewed as a major trend in
French novels and paintings between 1850 and 1880.
 One of the first appearances of the term realism was in the Mercure français du
XIXe siècle in 1826, in which the word is used to describe a doctrine based not upon
imitating past artistic achievements but upon the truthful and accurate depiction of the
models that nature and contemporary life offer the artist.
 Realism was stimulated by several intellectual developments in the first half of the
19th century.

REALISM

 Refers to the view of “reality” of any material object existing in the material world of the
human mind.
 Holds that what one perceives is real and is out of their existing concrete reality.

Ex. I see the tree with my naked eye as a concrete reality (sensible).

 The tree exist in the real world and has a proponent of his own such as, hardness and
thickness. (That tree is independent of anyone perception it is therefore “real”.

It’s not just an abstract concept produced by the mind, as the idealist would have it to believe.

IMPLICATIONS OF REALISM IN EDUCATION

1. Aims of education

 In realism in general
o To prepare the student/child for a happy and successful life.
 A realistic education aims to:
o Acquaint the student/child with the nature and the social environment
o Develop the physical and mental power of the student/ child.
o Develops and strains the senses of the child
o Prepare the child for real life.
o Provide the understanding of the material world through inquiry
o Transmit culture and develop human nature
o Enable the child know the world In order to ensure the survival and good life
2. of curriculum

 The curriculum in a realistic education is develop according to utility and needs


o The curriculum in the realistic education contains subject concerning day
to day activities.

Here are the following subject:

o Natural science
o Physical science
o Health culture physical exercise
o Math
o Geography
o History
o Astronomy

3. The rule of the teacher in realist education

 Realism is in favor of training of teacher before they involves in teaching

IN REALIST EDUCTION TEACHER MUST:

 Teacher should have full knowledge of:


o Subject matter
o psychology of leaners
o Scientific way of delivering the education.
 The teacher must also encourage the learners to observe and experience the natural object
and phenomena.
o So that the learners will be able to find out new fact with respect of construction
of knowledge
 The teacher should inform the learners about
o Scientific discoveries
o Invention
o Researches in different fields of knowledge.

4. Method s of teaching

 Is to abstract from the personality of both teacher and the student.


o If the teacher ask the learner will answer, (vice versa).
 Allow the fact will speak for them.
 In the process of presenting the facts:
 The teacher the teacher is not expected to present his own subject opinion on the
matter.
 The teacher must present the fact as they are.
o Not allowed to add anything of his/her own.

Aristotle is generally regarded as the father of realism. Aristotle's realism emphasizes that
humans must learn about the world.
