Activity 1 • Before you read, discuss the following questions with your classmates.
Laugh with friends or giggle at a cartoon. It doesn’t matter why you’re laughing. Humour and laughing is good for you, and that’s
no joke, because being over-serious makes it more difficult to deal with daily tasks
(1) A good laugh helps you right away. When you laugh, changes happen in your body. For
example, you take in more air, and that’s good for your hearth. A good laugh increases your
hearth rate which can benefit your heart, muscles, and lungs because it increases blood
circulation in the body. When you laugh, your brain also releases chemicals that make you feel
happy. Laughing can also make you feel relaxed for up to 45 minutes.
(2) Laughter can also reduce pain. You probably don’t want to chuckle when you’re injured,
but laughter helps the body make its own natural pain medicine. Laughing is also a great
exercise! Researches show that laughing 100 times is as good as riding bike for 15 minutes.
(3) Negative thoughts can cause you to feel sad or worried. But when you laugh, your brain
makes chemicals that make these feelings go away. These chemicals also prevent some
illnesses. Many scientists also believe humour and laughter are good for your mental health.
They helps people communicate better with each other.
(4) Using your sense of humour at work, school, and daily life can be a useful tool to get more
pleasure and comfort out of your day. In our fast-paced world, people are always looking for
solutions to combat stress and fatigue. However, they often underestimate the power of humour
and turn to expensive and sometimes harmful solutions. They fail to realize that humour and
laughter can produce wounders! To laugh with passion stimulates you mentally, emotionally,
physically and spiritually. You feel light, powerful, joyful and at peace with yourself.
Always remember to take a break or some rest from work or studies and recharge with fun, smiles, and laughter. And why don’t
you try laughing out loud every day? See how you feel.

Part : 8 BOOST : Vocabulary Learning
Vocabulary knowledge is perhaps the most important factor when it comes to reading comprehension because
if you sit down to read a book and you don’t know the vocabulary used, you’ll struggle to understand the meaning
of the text.
We see similar evidence when it comes to listening skills, for obvious reasons. Clearly, if you have never seen or
heard a particular piece of vocabulary in a second language, it will be much harder to recognise and decode the
sounds and therefore extract the meaning.
For speaking, if you have never learned some particular words, you will be unable to completely express your
message. And, it will be frustrating to cut the conversation. For this reason, knowledge of vocabulary is widely
considered to be perhaps the most crucial element when it comes to person’s ability to speak a foreign language.
You’ll also find it much easier to express yourself in writing if you have a larger vocabulary. You’ll have a larger
selection of words to choose from and you’ll be able to be more precise when you’re expressing a thought,
feeling, event or idea.
Develop a reading habit. Vocabulary building is easiest when you encounter words in context. Seeing words
appear in a novel or a newspaper article can be far more helpful than seeing them appear on vocabulary lists.
Not only do you gain exposure to unfamiliar words; you also see how they’re used.
Use the dictionary. Dictionaries are helpful resources if they are used properly. They can jog your memory
about synonyms that would actually be better words in the context of what you’re writing. A full dictionary
definition can also educate you about antonyms, root words…which is another way to learn vocabulary.
Use it or lose it. There is no point in knowing a lot of words without using them. This means you have to take
it upon yourself to put your personal dictionary into use. If you come across an interesting word in your reading,
use it in conversation. By doing so, you will gain the art of choosing the appropriate words in your dialogues.
Play word games. Classic games like 4 pics 1 word and words of wonders can function as a fun way to expand
your English vocabulary. If you really want to be efficient, follow up rounds of these word games with a little
note-taking. Keep a list of the different words you learned, and then study that list from time to time.
Use the structure and form of the words. Knowing the parts of words (prefixes-roots-suffixes) helps you
understand the meaning whole families of words.
