Brief history of ICC
The ICC was established by the Rome Statute of
the International Criminal Court in 1998, and it
began sittings on July 1, 2002, after 60 countries
had ratified the Rome Statute. To date, some 120
countries have ratified it. The ICC has jurisdiction
over offenses committed after July 1, 2002, in a
country that has ratified the Rome Statute or by an
individual in one of the ratifying countries, even if
the individual is a national of a country that has
not ratified it. The ICC sits in the Netherlands at
The Hague.
What is the ICC and its purpose?
The International Criminal Court (ICC) is a
permanent international tribunal established to
prosecute individuals for genocide, crimes
against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of
aggression. Its objective is to ensure
accountability for the gravest international
crimes and to promote justice, peace, and
respect for human rights worldwide.
Importance
The International Criminal Court (ICC) serves as a crucial
institution in the global pursuit of justice and
accountability for the most serious international crimes,
such as genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity,
and the crime of aggression. Its importance lies in
providing a mechanism for holding individuals
accountable for these crimes when national authorities
are unable or unwilling to do so. By prosecuting
perpetrators, the ICC contributes to deterrence,
prevention, and the promotion of peace and stability
worldwide. Additionally, the ICC plays a role in promoting
the rule of law and upholding human rights standards on
a global scale.
Events where ICC is involved
a) Darfur Conflict: The ICC issued arrest warrants
for Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir and other
senior officials for crimes against humanity and
war crimes committed during the conflict in
Darfur.

Brief history of NATO
Formed in 1949 with the signing of the Washington
Treaty, NATO is a security alliance of 30 countries
from North America and Europe. NATO's
fundamental goal is to safeguard the Allies'
freedom and security by political and military
means.
What is NATO and its purpose?
NATO promotes democratic values and enables members
to consult and cooperate on defence and security-related
issues to solve problems, build trust and, in the long run,
prevent conflict. It also contributes to upholding the
rules-based international order, helping defend the
values on which the Alliance is based. As an
intergovernmental organisation, NATO provides a forum
where members can consult on any issue and take
decisions on political and military matters affecting their
security. All NATO decisions are made by consensus,
meaning that all NATO member countries have reached
agreement after discussion and consultation.
Importance
Since its first major peace-support operation in
the Balkans in the early 1990s, the tempo and
diversity of NATO operations have increased.
NATO has been engaged in missions that cover
the full spectrum of crisis management
operations – from combat and peacekeeping, to
training and logistics support, to surveillance
and humanitarian relief.
Events where NATO is involved
Today, over 140 000 military personnel are
engaged in NATO missions around the world,
successfully managing complex ground, air and
naval operations in all types of environment. These
forces are currently operating in Afghanistan,
Kosovo, the Mediterranean, off the Horn of Africa
and in Somalia.
