Group 10 Comparison & Contrast Pattern (Block Style)

The document discusses comparison and contrast organization using the block style. It explains that the block style organizes a comparison and contrast essay by discussing one subject in full in one paragraph, then the other subject in the next paragraph, rather than alternating between the two subjects point-by-point. An example compares how Moby Dick and The Raven are discussed separately in different paragraphs using the block style organization.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A.Background of the Paper

The compare and contrast organization strategy is another useful strategy. It is important to
define these concepts immediately. When the instructor directs you to create contrasting
paragraphs or themes, the instructor is definitely asking you to compare and contrast two
people, things, items, etc. Reveals only similarities when asked to compare two (usually
more) people or things. Compare and contrast are general expressions that mean to compare
and contrast two entities (persons, things, institutions, or other things) against a set of
guidelines.

CHAPTER II
DISCUSSION
1
1.The Meaning of Comparison and Contrast Organization: Block Style
A comparison and contrast essay focuses on how two items or texts are similar, different, or
similar in some ways and different in others. You can compare and contrast any number of
items including theories, events, books, or people. A comparison in description discusses
similar elements, where as a contrast in description discusses different elements. A
comparative contrast essay then analyzes two subjects by comparing, contrasting, or both.
Here are a few suggestions that will help you create a successful comparison and contrast
essay:
o Choose a topic that you can argue. Remember that you need to do more than just list
how items are similar or different!
o Discuss both items equally.
o Remember to connect your ideas! One of the biggest problems that students run into
with this type of essay is not actually comparing the two items – they end up simply
summarizing information about each one. One way to connect your ideas is to use
transitional words and phrases that emphasize how items are similar or dissimilar.
o Use the conclusion to restate your thesis, to summarize your main points, and to tell
your reader why your findings are significant.
A comparative essay is to select two or more subjects that are related in a meaningful way.
The purpose of making comparisons or contrasts is to reveal subtle differences or unexpected
similarities, not to state the obvious. For example, if you want to focus on the contrast
between two subjects, don't choose apples and oranges. Rather, you can choose to compare
and contrast two oranges or two apples to highlight subtle differences. For example, Red
Delicious Apple is sweet and Granny Smith is sour and sour. Distinguishing elements in
similar categories can help your audience better understand that category. This is the purpose
of comparative essays.
Similarly, choose two seemingly unrelated subjects to focus the comparison. For a
comparative essay, you probably wouldn't choose two apples or he two oranges. Rather, try
comparing the similarities of apples and oranges. The more dissimilar the two subjects seem
at first, the more interesting the comparative essay will be.
Comparative and contrasting essays follow our recommended essay structure. The guide you
linked to goes into more detail, but in a nutshell, your comparative essay should follow a
simple format: first, middle, last.
 Introduction: A place to describe your thesis or explain the content of your essay.
 Body: A place to actually list the similarities and differences of the subject. largest
section
 Conclusion: Summarize your points.
The introduction, usually consists of one or two paragraphs and should include a thesis
statement to tell the reader what to expect from the rest of the essay. You can follow the same
guidelines for writing your introduction as for other essay types, but be sure to mention all

2
the subjects. Similarly, you can write an essay conclusion using standard rules and best
practices.
Block styles are usually divided into paragraphs. A paragraph on one subject and a new
paragraph on another subject. Let's look at an example of a comparative and contrasting
essay. When there's nothing behind the mask: Moby Dick vs. The Raven. In the first
paragraph after the introduction, the author only talks about his Moby Dick Ahab, but in the
next paragraph he's The Raven's narrator. talk only about Each subject has its own paragraph.

2. Organize a Comparison and Contrast Essay

There are two ways to organize a comparison and contrast essay.
 The first (and often the clearest) method is the Point-by-Point method
 The second method is called the Block method
Both methods are described on this handout. Either one is acceptable-just make sure that you
stick to whatever option you choose.
1.Point-By-Point Method
The Point-by-Point method alternates arguments about the two items (A and B) that you are
comparing and/or contrasting. The pattern is as follows:
o Point 1 - discuss A
o Point 1 - discuss B
o Discussion about overall links between A and B

o Point 2 – discuss A
o Point 2 - discuss B
o Discussion about overall links between A and B

o Etc.
This method is often easier for a reader to follow because similarities and differences are
more obvious when placed next to each other. For this reason, writers generally use this
method for longer essays.
2.Block Method
The Block Method presents all arguments related to A, and then compares and/or contrasts
them to all arguments related to B. This style is a little bit more difficult to use because there
is so much space between points about A and points about B; however, it can be useful for
shorter assignments. The pattern is as follows:
o Point 1 about A
o Point 2 about A

3
o Etc.

o Point 1 about B (with discussion about connections to A)

o Point 2 about B (with discussion about connections to A)
o Etc.
There are a couple of common problems that students run into using this method:
 A lot of students end up simply listing everything about A and then everything about
B without actually making connections between them.
 Students may include the connections in one paragraph towards the end of the essay.
Since your whole essay is supposed to make these connections, you won’t be
completing the assignment if you don’t include the comparisons throughout.
To avoid these problems with this structure, make sure to include lots of transitional
statements when discussing B, such as “In the same way” or “In contrast to”. This will help
your reader to remember information about A, and to understand how A and B are related to
each other.

3. The Example of Comparison and Contrast Organization: Block Style

4
4.WRITING A COMPARISON AND CONTRAST ESSAY

5
First choose whether you want to compare seemingly disparate subjects, contrast seemingly
similar subjects, or compare and contrast subjects. Once you have decided on a topic,
introduce it with an engaging opening paragraph. Your thesis should come at the end of the
introduction, and it should establish the subjects you will compare, contrast, or both as well
as state what can be learned from doing so.
The body of the essay can be organized in one of two ways: by subject or by individual
points. The organizing strategy that you choose will depend on, as always, your audience and
your purpose. You may also consider your particular approach to the subjects as well as the
nature of the subjects themselves; some subjects might better lend themselves to one structure
or the other. Make sure to use comparison and contrast phrases to cue the reader to the ways
in which you are analyzing the relationship between the subjects.
After you finish analyzing the subjects, write a conclusion that summarizes the main points of
the essay and reinforces your thesis.

CLOSING

6
A.Conclusion
A comparison and contrast essay focuses on how two items or texts are similar, different, or
similar in some ways and different in others. You can compare and contrast any number of
items including theories, events, books, or people.
A comparison in description discusses similar elements, whereas a contrast in description
discusses different elements. A comparative contrast essay then analyzes two subjects by

will be. Comparative and contrasting essays follow our recommended essay structure. The

follow a simple format: first, middle, last.
B.Suggestion
We are that there are still many shortcomings that we have, both in the writings and
discussions that we present, therefore please give us your suggestions so that we can make
better papers, and hopefully this paper can be useful for all of us, and become our insight in
understand paragraphs.
