Parameter and Statistic DLP

The document outlines a detailed lesson plan on distinguishing between population parameters and sample statistics. The objectives are for students to define parameter and statistic, construct visual representations of them, and appreciate the importance of accurately distinguishing between the two. The lesson plan includes activities, resources, and procedures for teaching students about parameters as characteristics of populations and statistics as characteristics of samples used to infer information about populations.

(M11/12SP-IIId-3)

D. Specific Learning Outcome

At the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
1.Define the terms parameter and statistic.
2.Construct graphs or charts to visually represent parameters and statistics.
3.Appreciate the importance of accurately distinguishing between
parameter and statistic in statistical analysis.

II. CONTENT

A. Subject Matter:
Topic: Population Parameters and Sample Statistics

Parameter  is the characteristics used to describe a population.

Statistic  is the characteristics of a sample used to infer information about the
population.

B. Value Focus:
Having faith in statistics is like believing in your favorite study spot—it might not
be perfect, but it's where you find the most reliable insights.

III. LEARNING RESOURCES

Book: Grade 11 Mathematics Book_Q3_Lesson 7.1 pages 335-342

Other Learning Resources: PowerPoint presentation, Activity material, Laptop, LED
TV

IV. PROCEDURE
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
A. Pre Activity
 Prayer
Before we start our lessons for today, I
would like to ask [Student’s name] to One student will lead the prayer.
lead us a prayer.

After the student has led the prayer,

the teacher can then conclude by
saying:

Thank you, [Student's name], for

leading us in prayer today. Let's carry
the spirit of this moment with us as we
start our lessons.

 Greetings
Good morning / afternoon class!
You may now take your seat.
How are you today?
Good morning / afternoon Sir!
 Checking Attendance
And now, I am going to check your We’re fine Sir.
attendance, once your name is called
kindly say “Present”.

 Classroom Rules (Student say “Present”)

Before we start our lesson today, I
would like to let you know my
classroom rules.

Be prepared for class.

Be quit when the teacher is talking.
Be quit when your classmates are
talking.
Raise your hand when you would like
to speak in class or need the CR. (Students listen attentively to the classroom
rules)
 Review or Recalling of Previous
Lesson

Last meeting, we have discussed about

Random Sampling.

What are the types of Random

Sampling Methods?
Types of Random Sampling Methods
1. Simple random sampling
2. Systematic sampling
3. Stratified sampling
4. Multistage Random Sampling

B. Motivation
Let’s play the
“Pass the Cabbage Game”
Let’s play the
“Pass the Cabbage Game” (Students listen attentively)
Let’s have a short activity.

Of the Philippines adult population, 36% has

an allergy. A sample of 1200 randomly Philippines
selected adults resulted in 33.2% reporting an
allergy. 1200 Adults

What is the population? Having an allergy.

What is the sample? 33.2%

What is the variable? 36%

Identify the statistic and give its value.

Identify the parameter and give its value. (Answer will vary)
Class, what do you think will be our topic
today based on the activity that we presented
a while ago?
C. Presentation
So, our topic for today it’s all about
Population Parameters and Sample Statistics.

So, everybody please read our objective for The learners will read the learning objective:
today.
At the end of the lesson, the students will be
able to:
1.Define the terms parameter and
statistic.
2.Construct graphs or charts to
visually represent parameters and
statistics.
3.Appreciate the importance of
accurately distinguishing between
parameter and statistic in statistical
analysis.
Thank you, class. This objective will serve as
our guide in today’s topic.
D. Activity Proper
For better understanding, let us have first an
activity.

The following are the instructions before the

group activity: (Students listen attentively to the instructions)
1. The class will be divided into three groups.
2 The group will do the activity within 5
minutes.

Group Activity

To generalize your learned skills and

concepts, take note of the similarities and
differences of parameter and statistic.

Direction: Draw a Venn diagram by listing

the similarities of parameter and statistic.
*Analysis Question:

Based on your activity what is Parameter? Based on the activity parameter is the
characteristics used to describe a population.

Example of Parameter. All people living in one city, all-male

teenagers worldwide, all elements in a
shopping cart, and all students in a classroom.

What is Statistic? Statistic is the characteristics of a sample used

to infer information about the population.
Example of Statistic. Fifty percent of people living in the U.S agree
with the latest health care proposal.
Researchers can’t ask hundreds of million of
people if they agree, so they take samples or
part of the population and calculate the rest.

What are the similarities of Parameter and A parameter and a statistic are both numerical
Statistic? characteristics of data, where a parameter
describes an entire population, and a statistic
describes a sample drawn from that
population.

What is the difference between Parameter and A parameter refers to a numerical

Statistic? characteristic of a population, which is the
entire group of individuals or items of
interest, while a statistic refers to a numerical
characteristic that describes a sample, which
is a subset of the population used to infer
conclusions about the population.

Can we relate this topic to another subject? Yes Sir!

What subject? Economics

In what way we can relate this topic to In economics, parameters and statistics are
Economics? used to analyze and infer the economic health
of a population, such as estimating the true
average income (parameter) based on sampled
data (statistic).
E. Abstraction

What is the fundamental difference between a A parameter describes a characteristic of a

parameter and a statistic in statistics? population, while a statistic describes a
characteristic of a sample.

How do parameters and statistics differ in Parameters are the values assumed by
their roles within hypothesis testing? population characteristics, while statistics are
calculated from sample data to make
inferences about population parameters.

When conducting a study, why is it crucial to Understanding this difference helps in

understand the distinction between a generalizing findings from samples to
parameter and a statistic? populations, ensuring the accuracy and
reliability of research conclusions.

Why are researchers often more interested in Estimating parameters provides insights into
estimating parameters rather than calculating the true characteristics of entire populations,
statistics? helping researchers make broader conclusions
beyond the limited scope of samples.
G. Application (based on real-life situation)

How can you relate parameter and statistic in In a real-life scenario, a parameter is like the
real-life scenario? true average height of all students in a school,
while a statistic is the average height of a
sample of 50 students randomly chosen from
that school.

Who can give me an example of parameter (Answers will vary)

and statistic based on real-life situation?

What are the Core Values of MCCEI? The Core Values of MCCEI are Wisdom,
Love, and Faith.

As students of MCCEI, what is the core As student of MCCEI, the core values that I
values that you have learn based on our topic have learn based on our topic is Faith.
today?

Why you choose Faith? Because trusting in the reliability of statistical

methods to accurately estimate population
parameters from sample data, and believing in
the value of evidence-based decision-making.
V. Evaluation
Direction: Decide whether the statement describes a PARAMETER or STATISTIC. Write your
answer on ½ crosswise sheet of paper.
1. The average income of the 40 out of 100 households in a certain Barangay is P 12, 213. 00 a
month.

2. Percentage of white cars in Philippines.

3. Number of senior high schools in Negros Occidental.

4. A recent survey of a sample of 250 high school students reported the average weight of 54.3
kg.
5. Average age of students in Mount Carmel College of Escalante Incorporated.

Answer Key:
1. Statistic
2. Parameter
3. Parameter
4. Statistic
5. Parameter

VI. Assignment/Enrichment
Direction: On your notebook. Understanding Parameter and Statistic in Statistical Analysis
Guided Question:
1. In your own words, define what a parameter is in the context of statistical analysis.
2. Define a statistic and explain how it differs from a parameter.
3. What is the difference between the Parameter and Statistics?
