Assignment 8

This document contains 4 questions from a heat transfer homework assignment due on March 13th. Question 1 involves calculating heat transfer rates for a plate submerged in flowing water and glycerin. Question 2 involves calculating heat transfer values for air flowing over a surface, including where transition from laminar to turbulent flow occurs. Question 3 involves calculating the maximum and actual heat removal rates for a fin attached to a surface to increase heat transfer. Question 4 asks for the heat transfer rate of a sphere in flowing air.

3R03 | Heat Transfer Winter 2024

Homework #8 – Due March 13th

Question 1 (Graded Question)

A 16cm–long, smooth plate with a temperature of 54ºC is placed at the bottom of a
channel. Liquid can flow through the channel at a rate of up to 2m/s as long as the fluid
temperature is kept at 20ºC.
a) What is the heat transfer rate half–way along the plate if the fluid is water?
b) What if the fluid is glycerin?
c) Between the glycerin and water, which exerts a higher drag force?

Hint: you will need a table that lists the relevant properties as a function of temperature.
Most heat transfer textbooks have one in the Appendix. A Heat Transfer Textbook
(Lienhard & Lienhard) is free and has such a table as Appendix A.

Question 2
Air at 10ºC flows over a smooth, sharp–edged, flat surface at 240km/hr. The surface
temperature is 10ºC. Turbulent transition begins at Rel=140 000 and ends at
Reu=315,000. Find:
(a) x-coordinate within which laminar-to-turbulent transition occurs
(b) Average heat transfer coefficient if the surface is 2m long
(c) Heat transfer coefficient at the trailing edge of the 2m surface
(d) thickness of the velocity boundary layer and the heat transfer coefficient at the end of
the laminar section of the flow

Question 3
Air at 27ºC and a velocity of 5m/s passes over a patch (As=20 mm x 20 mm) on a large
surface, which is maintained at 127ºC. Heat leaves the patch at a rate of 0.5. To increase
the heat removal rate, a stainless steel (AISI 304) pin fin of diameter 5 mm is affixed to
the patch which is assumed to remain at 127ºC. The thermal conductivity of the steel fin
is 15.8W/mK.

a) Determine the maximum possible heat removal rate through the fin.
b) What fin length would provide a close approximation to (a)?
c) What is the fin effectiveness?
d) What is the % increase due to the installation of the fin?

Question 4
Air at 25ºC flows over a 10-mm-diameter sphere with a velocity of 15 m/s, while the
surface of the sphere is maintained at 75ºC. The drag coefficient is approximately 0.4.
What is the rate of heat transfer from the sphere?
