CHAPTER 1- NUMBER SYSTEM

A system in which we deal with different type of number is termed as 'number


system '. Numbers (Numerals) which are the symbolical representation in
mathematical language are the base of Mathematics. In Hindu - Arabic system 1 digit
(0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9) are used to represent any number

NUMBER SYSTEMS:
Numeration means expressing a number in words. We express numbers in two ways.
These two systems of numeration are

1. Indian system 2. International system

Types of Numbers
Natural Numbers ; Numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ... etc, which are used for counting are
called natural numbers.

The number zero (0) is not a natural number.

Whole Numbers: All natural numbers together with 0 (zero) are called whole
numbers. Thus, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, ..., etc., are whole numbers.

O is the smallest whole number.

Even Numbers : Those numbers which are divisible by 2 are known as even
numbers, e.g. 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 etc.

2 is the smallest even number.

Odd Numbers : Numbers which are not divisible by 2 are called odd numbers e.g.
1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 etc.

1 is the smallest odd number.

Prime Numbers: A number greater than 1 which cannot be divided by any other
number except 1 and itself, is called a prime number, e.g. 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17 etc.

2 is the least prime number

Coprime:Those number that have only one common factor,namely 1,it is called
coprime.

Example: 4 and 5 only one common factor is 1.

Composite Numbers : A positive integer that has atleast one divisor other than 1
and itself is called a composite number, e.g. 4, 6, 8, 9 are all composite numbers.

(i) 1 is neither prime nor composite.


(ii) 4 is the smallest composite number.

Integers Numbers: Integers number are two types


• Positive numbers
• Negative numbers
• Zero

Helping Tips
• Sum of any 2, 4, 6, even number. odd numbers must be an
• Sum of any 3, 5, 7,... odd numbers must be an odd number
• Difference of any 2 odd numbers must be an even number.

Tests of Divisibility
Divisible by 2: If the last digit of a number is either 2, 4, 6,8 or 0, the number is
divisible by 2, e.g. 242, 306, 488, 500.

Divisible by 3: If the sum of the digits of a number is divisible by 3, the number is


divisible by 3, e.g. 243, 2427, 3456. e.g. 243 2+4+3 3 9 =-=3 3

So, 243 is divisible by 3.

Divisible by 4: If the last two digits of a number are divisible by 4 or 100, the
number is divisible by 4, e.g. 1424, 1500, 1748. e.g. 1424 Dividing the last two digits
by 4, we get, 24 =6

So, 1424, is divisible by 4.

Divisible by 5: If the last digit of a number is either 5 or 0, the number is divisible


by 5, e.g. 375, 3460, 6575.

Divisible by 6: Which are divisible by both 2 and 3 are divisible by 6.


For example: 186. 630,930…… etc

Divisible by 7: If a number is divisible by seven,then ‘the difference between twice


the ones digit of the provide number and the remaining part of the given number
should be equal to zero’

For example, let's check if 224 is divisible by 7 or not.

The ones digit in 224, is 4. When the ones digit is doubled, the result is 4 x 2 = 8.

22 is the remaining part of the number under consideration.

Now, subtract 8 from 22 to get the difference. 22-8=14

The difference between the two numbers, in this case, is 14, a multiple of 7 (since, 7 X
2 = 14).

Therefore, the number 224 is divisible by 7.

Divisible by 8: If the last three digits are zero or divisible by 8, the whole number is
divisible by 8.
For example: 9000, 7432…..etc

Divisible by 9: If the sum of the digits of a number is divisible by 9, the number is


divisible by 9. e.g. 243, 3438, 4554, etc. e.g. 243

According to divisibility test, So, 243 is divisible by 9. 2+4+3=9 ‫و‬

Divisible by 10: If the last digit of a number is 0, the number is divisible by 10, e.g.
540, 1860, 2370….etc

Divisible by 11: The given number can only be completed divided by 11 if the
difference of the sum of digits at odd position and sum of digits at even position in a
number 0 and 11

Dividend = Divisor × Quotient + Remainder

Place Value and Face Value in a Given Number


Place value of unit digit = (Unit digit) × 1

Place value of tens digit = (Tens digit) × 10

Place value of hundreds digit = (Hundreds digit) × 100

Place value of thousands digit = (Thousands digit) × 1000 and so on.

In a numeral, the face value of a digit is the value of the digit itself irrespective of its
place in the numeral.

Expanded form:
Example: 97651= 9 x 10000 + 7x1000+6×100+5 x 10 + 8 x 1

Short form:
Example: 5 x 10000 + 7x1000+2×100+8 x 10 + 3 x 1=57283

Rounded off to the nearest:


• Rounded off to the nearest 10
• Rounded off to the nearest 100
• Rounded off to the nearest 1000
How to write greatest n-digit number
Since, we know that 9 is the greatest digit given to all digits in Hindu-Arabic system,
hence 9 is the only digit which can be used to form the greatest number.

2 digit: If we want to write two digit greatest number, we must write 9 twice, i.e. 99
3 digit: If we want to write three digit greatest number, we must write 9 thrice, i.e.
999.

4 digit: If we want to write four digit greatest number, we must write 9 four times, i.e.
9999 and so on.

How to write smallest n-digit number


Since, we know that o is the smallest and I is the second smallest to all digits in
Hindu-Arabic system. So, I and O are the only digits which can be used to form the
smallest number and 1 must be placed before 0, since occurrence of O at first place
has no meaning due to its face value.

2 digit : If we want to write two digit smallest number, we must write 1 at first place
and thereafter single 0 must be placed.

i.e. 10

3 digit : If we want to write three digit smallest number, we must write 1 at first place
and thereafter double O must be placed.

i.e. 100

4 digit : If we want to write four digit smallest number, we must write 1 at first place
and thereafter triple 0 must be placed.

i.e. 1000 and so on.

Approximate Value
Sometimes, we face the conditions, where we have to depend on approximate values.

e.g. If we are celebrating a party in our home, then we arrange the party for
approximate number of guests. Suppose, in a particular month, a person's expenditure
is ₹ 1976, he can assume it to be 2000.

Roman Numbers
The numbers which we use are called 'Arabic Numbers' but sometimes we use the
another system for writing numbers called Roman System. Mostly, Roman numbers
are used to denote the class standard and position (rank) of a candidate, in faces of
clocks, in page numbering etc.

The letters used in roman numbers are
