Tutorial 1

This document appears to be a tutorial worksheet for a Random Processes: Detection and Estimation course. It contains 10 questions related to probability concepts such as finding the probability of events occurring, counting the number of possible outcomes when objects are grouped or divided into sets, and calculating probabilities when events are not equally likely. The questions cover topics like tossing dice, dividing objects into groups, and generating symbols from a random source.

Tutorial-1

ME- ECE PEC112: Random Processes: Detection

and Estimation (RPDE)
Name of Faculty: Pravindra Kumar, Ph.D.

Que-1. Find the probability of a 4 turning up at least once in two tosses of a fair die.

Que-2. In how many ways can 10 objects be split into two groups containing 4 and 6 objects,
respectively?

Que-3. A shelf has 6 digital communication books and 4 Image processing books. Find the
probability that 3 particular digital communication books will be together.

Que-4. In one year, three awards (research, teaching, and service) will be given to a class of 25
postgraduate students in ECE department. If each student can receive at most one
award, how many possible selections are there?

Que-5. A die is loaded in such a way that an even number is twice as likely to occur as an odd
number. If 𝐴 is the event that a number less than 4 occurs on a single toss of the die,
find 𝑃(𝐴) .

Que-6. In Q.5, let 𝐴 be the event that an even number turns up and let 𝐵 be the event that a
number divisible by 3 occurs. Find 𝑃(𝐴 ∪ 𝐵) and 𝑃(𝐴 ∩ 𝐵) .

Que-7. A police department in a small city consists of 10 officers. If the department policy is
to have 5 of the officers patrolling the streets, 2 of the officers working full time at the
station, and 3 of the officers on reserve at the station, how many different divisions of
the 10 officers into the 3 groups are possible?

Que-8. Ten children are to be divided into an 𝐴 team and a 𝐵 team of 5 each. The 𝐴 team will
play in one league and the team in another. How many different divisions are possible?

Que-9. In order to play a game of basketball, 10 children at a playground divide themselves

into two teams of 5 each. How many different divisions are possible?

Que-10. Suppose a telephone source generating two symbols dots & dashes. Here dots were
thrice as likely to occurs as the dashes. Find the probability of occurrence of both
symbols.
