of dance derived form popular music
combined with street dance and
choreographs or dance movements
that jive with the beat.Hip-hop is
every energetic and dancer can move
freely and can add their own
personality into the dance.
Hip-hop dance is a unique and
exciting style of street dance that is
most commonly performed to hip-hop
music. Hip-hop dance is a vibrant
form of dance that combines a variety
of freestyle movements to create a
cultural piece of art. Through its three
main styles of popping, locking, and
breaking, hip-hop dance has evolved
into one of the most popular and
influential styles of dance.

A History of Hip-hop Dance

Hip-hop dance began during the late
1960’s and early 1970’s, originally
inspired by the movements of African
dancing, and flourished as a new
style of dance performed on the street
for the people. Hip-hop incorporates
aspects of modern dance, tap, and
swing, integrating music and complex
movements to form artistry.

4 Elements of Hip-hop
“The term hip-hop refers to a complex
culture comprising four elements:
deejaying (turntabling), rapping
(MCing or rhyming), graffiti painting
(graf or writing), and b-boying
(encompasses hip-hop dance, style,
and attitude with the sort of virile body
language).”

“DID YOU KNOW: Postural

semantics is a fifth element that refers
to knowledge of self-consciousness
and is sometimes added to the list of
hip-hop elements particularly by
socially conscious hip-hop artists and
scholars”

Class, What do you think are the Stronger and tone Muscles,
health benefits of Hip-hop dancing? Alternative Weight Loss Program,
Improves Cardiovascular Strength,
Balance, Agility, and other Fitness
Components, lastly, Develop
Personal Satisfaction and Better
Social Skills, Sir.

Very well said!

The health benefits of Hip-hop

dancing

Stronger and tone Muscles - Most

hip-hop routines use the muscle of
the body especially in the popping
and locking dance moves; it is mainly
a combination of arms, legs, neck,
shoulders, and torso muscles in a
shaking movement.

Alternative Weight Loss Program -

A major advantage of hip hop dance
is that it’s a full body workout. A
typical class of 60 minutes can have
you dripping in sweat, depending on
the intensity.

It involves a lot of fast and dynamic

movements that can burn a lot of
calories. Most of the movements take
place in the hips, which is where its
name derives from, so it works great
for toning the abs.

Improves Cardiovascular Strength,

Balance, Agility, and other Fitness
Components - Hip hop dancing can
be great cardio, it can also help you
strengthen your muscles, too. They
are working out aerobically every time
they make a step while dancing. By
pushing yourself to learn more
complex routines and training your
muscles beyond the typical routine
you used to, it can help tone muscles
and increase the flexibility and
elasticity of joints.

Develop Personal Satisfaction and

Better Social Skills - Hip hop
classes provide a fast-paced, yet fun
environment in which one will get
exercise and make new friends.
Learning to dance is a great way to
bring a shy child out of their shell and
build confidence.

What are the basic dance

movements in Hip-hop dancing?

Pop-lock dance move - it involves

contracting and relaxing muscles to
create a jerking or popping effect in
the body, while locking involves
freezing in a certain position and then
abruptly moving again.

Crip Walk - The Walk is probably the

most basic dance move. It exists in
almost every dance. Walks
approximately correspond normal
walking steps, taking into the account
the basic technique of the dance in
question. (For example, in Latin
dance walks the toe hits the floor first,
rather than the heel.

Walk it out - The dance typically

includes steps such as stepping
forward and backward, swaying side
to side, and occasionally
incorporating arm movements and
hand gestures. It became a significant
part of hip-hop and urban dance
culture during that time and is still
enjoyed and performed by dancers
today.

Kick Ball Change - Kick ball change

is a dance move that consists of a
kick followed by the ball change.
Normally it uses a split-beat count:
1&2 or 1a2 and has a syncopated
feeling, i.e., the accent of the motion
is on "two". The move consists of
three distinct actions and can be
started with any foot.

Moon Walk - or backslide, is

a popping dance move in which the
performer glides backwards but their
body actions suggest forward motion.

Harlem Shake - The Harlem shake is

a style of hip-hop dance and is
characterized by jerky arm and
shoulder movements in time to music.
