POLLUTION
Pollution is the introduction of harmful materials into the environment,
which can be natural or human-made. Pollutants damage air, water, and land quality
and are caused by various sources such as cars, burning coal, industries, homes, and
pesticides. All living things depend on Earth's supply of air and water, and when
these resources are polluted, all forms of life are threatened.
Pollution is a global problem, with urban areas being more polluted than
countryside, and pollution can spread to remote places where no people live.
Pollution can also be carried by air and water currents, ocean currents, migrating
fish, wind, and smoke from factories. The three major types of pollution are air
pollution, water pollution, and land pollution.
Air pollution can be visible or invisible, and it can be dangerous, making
people's eyes burn, have difficulty breathing, and increase the risk of lung cancer. It
can also kill quickly, as seen in 1984 when a pesticide plant accident in Bhopal, India,
released a deadly gas into the air. Natural disasters can also cause air pollution to
increase quickly, such as volcanic eruptions that eject volcanic ash and gases into the
atmosphere. Volcanic gases can kill nearby residents and make the soil infertile for
years.
Most air pollution is not natural but comes from burning fossil fuels, such as
coal, oil, and natural gas. Gasoline produced by cars and trucks produces carbon
monoxide, a colorless, odorless gas that is harmful in high concentrations. Cars and
factories produce other common pollutants, such as nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide,
and hydrocarbons, which react with sunlight to produce smog, a thick fog or haze of
air pollution. Smog makes breathing difficult, especially for children and older adults.
Acid rain, caused by air pollutants mixing with moisture, can kill trees,
devastate lakes, streams, and other waterways, and wear away marble and other
kinds of stone. Governments have tried to prevent acid rain by limiting the amount
of pollutants released into the air, but it remains a major problem in the developing
world, especially Asia.
Greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, occur naturally in
the atmosphere and are necessary for life on Earth. However, human activities such
as burning fossil fuels and destroying forests have increased the amount of
greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, leading to global warming. This increase in
global average temperatures, caused in part by human activity, is causing ice sheets
and glaciers to melt, sea levels to rise, and coastal regions to flood. Ocean
acidification is another phenomenon that contributes to climate change.
