10X2=20

1. The boiling point of oxygen has been determined to be -182.95Deg C.

What is the value of this temperature when expressed as an absolute
temperature in the MKS system of units?
2. What is the potential energy of an object with a mass of 20 kilogram at
a point 500 meters above the ground level?
3. If a current flowing through a electrical system is 4 Amps. What is the
total wattage if voltage is 230V at 50Hz?
4. Define current?
5. Define sound?
6. Define Frequency?
7. What is Charles law?
8. What is mechanical stress and strain?
9. Define Aerosol?
10. Define Static pressure?

SECTION-B

NOTE: ANSWER ANY FIVE QUESTIONS. EACH QUESTION CARRY SIX MARKS

5X6=30

11. If we have 2lb moles of sulphuric acid (H2SO4), how many kilograms of
sulphuric acid do we have? (Atomic weights H=1, S=32, O=16)
12. A 100ft3 container of hydrogen is under 1000 psig pressure at
temperature of 80Deg F. Calculate the mass of hydrogen in pounds.
(Atomic weight H=1)
13. Calculate the volume in liters occupied by 1 gram mole of gas under
STP conditions?
14. Acetone, (CH3)2CO, has a TLV = 750PPM. Calculate the TLV for
acetone in mg/m3. Atomic Weight: C=12, H=1, O= 16.
15. At a manufacturing site in company XYZ during an 8- Hour shift, a
worker is exposed to 100PPM of a chemical for 4 hours and to 150 PPM
for 2 hours. The TWA exposure for this worker is?
16. Two resistors with resistance of 5 and 10 ohms are arranged in parallel
in a circuit having a potential difference of 110 Volts. The amount of
current drawn by the two resistors will be?
17. You are standing 2 feet from a radiation source. How far should you
move away to reduce your exposure to 1/100 of the original value?
18. The volumetric flow rate of air through a centrifugal fan is 1000 ft3 per
minute at 500 RPM. If we increase the impeller speed to 4000 RPM,
how much air can we pump through this fan?

SECTION-C

NOTE: ANSWER ANY FIVE QUESTIONS. EACH QUESTION CARRY TEN MARKS

5X10=50

19. Calculate standard deviation for Y1 = 5,6,9,3,5,2.

20. An Industrial Hygienist wishes to identify which of his three personal
sampling pumps has a flow rate both greater than 450 cc/min, but at
the same time as close as possible to 500 cc/min. to make this
determination, he uses a bubble flow meter whose marked interior
volume of 135ml has been certified to be traceable to an NIST
volumetric standard. He makes 5 runs with each of his 3 sampling
pumps, using a stop watch to time the movement of the soap bubble.
His results are summarized in the following tabulation, which shows
the 5 separate time intervals he measured during which each of his 3
candidate pumps delivered 135ml of air. Which of these 3 pumps should
this industrial hygienist select?
Sampl e Pump#1 Sampl e Pump #2 Sampl e Pump #3

21. A worker was exposed, over his work shift, to various levels of n-
Pentane, and for varying periods of time, as shown in the tabulated
history below. The appropriate ACGIH standards that apply to n-
Pentane are: the TLV-TWA=600 ppm(Vol), and the TLV- STEL= 750
ppm(Vol). What was this employee’s 8 – hour exposure to n-pentane?
2.0 Hours 451 PPM(VOL)

3.0 Hours 728 PPM(VOL)

1.5 Hours 619 PPM(VOL)

1.5 Hours 501 PPM(VOL)

Give your conclusion weather he has exceeded the TWA or not?

22. Benzene is a relatively unique volatile organic in that it has three
published OSHA Permissible Exposure Limits – its PEL-TWA = 1.0
PPM(VOL), its PEL-STEL = 5.0 PPM(VOL), and its PEL-C = 25.0
PPM(VOL). Express these concentrations in mg/m3, Assuming STP
conditions. Benzene molecular weight is 78.11.
23. In a workplace at 7 locations sound was measured to be 82 dB, 86 dB,
95 dB, 65 dB, 90 dB, 75 dB, 105 dB. If an employee is working in this
workplace will he be over exposed to sound if he is working 8 Hours
shift.
24. The amount of radiation produced by a source “A” at an unknown
location away from the source is 500 rems and source “B” is 1000
rems. The radioactivity measured at 10 meters from source “A” is 50
rems. At what distance from the source “A” the activity of 500 rems
was measured and at what distance the radiation of source “B” will be
10 rems?
25. A worker drops a 3 pound wrench while working on a scaffold 50 feet
above the ground. How long does it take for the wrench t reach the
ground? What is the speed of this wrench just when it reached the
ground? Neglect air resistance?
26. The vapor pressure of pure ethanol at 20Deg C is 44 mmHG . Alcohol
contains 45% ethanol and 55% water by weight. What would be partial
vapor pressure of ethanol above a shot glass containing 200ml of
alcohol in closed room at temp 20 deg C at 765mm Hg? If this shot
glass with alcohol is not covered and let it to evaporate, what would be
concentration of ethanol in ppm? MW Ethanol = 46.07 amu & MW water
= 18.02 amu?
