CHAPTER ONE

1.1 INTRODUCTION
The student industrial training is the training programme which forms part of
the academic standards in the various degree programmes for all Nigeria
Tertiary Institutions. It seeks to bridge the gap existing between technology
and other professional education programmes in Nigerian Tertiary
Institutions.

1.2 BACKGROUND
The student industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) was established in
1973/1974 session by Industrial Training Fund (ITF) to solve the problem of
lack of adequate practical skills preparatory for employment in industries by
Nigerian graduates of tertiary institutions.

The scheme exposes students to industry based skills necessary for a smooth
transition from the classroom to the world of work. It affords students of the
tertiary institutions the opportunity of being familiarized and expose to the
needed experience in handling machinery and equipment which are usually
not available in the educational institutions. Participation in SIWES has
become a necessary pre-condition for the award of Diploma and Degree
certificate in specific disciplines in most institutions of higher learning in the
country, in accordance with the education policy of government. Operators -
The ITF, the coordinating agencies (NUC, NCCE, NBTE), employers of labor
and the institutions.

The scheme was designed to expose students to industrial environment and

enable them to develop occupational competency so that they can readily
contribute their quota to national economic and technological development
after graduation. It also enables students acquire knowledge, skills and
experience to perform jobs in the respected fields.

1.2 OBJECTIVES
The objectives of SIWES include:
 Provision of an avenue for student in institutions learning to acquire
industrial skills and prepare students for the industrial work situation
which they are likely to meet after graduation.
 Expose students to work methods and techniques in handling equipment
and machinery in their institutions.
 Provides students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge in real
work situation thereby bridging the gap between theory and practical.
 Enlist and strengthen employer’s involvement in the entire education
process and prepare students for employment in industry and commerce
(Information and Guideline for SIWES 2002).
 To help student access area of interest and suitability for their chosen
profession.
 To change the orientation of student towards labor market when seeking
for jobs
