Easy way out

Foreword

There are lots of books that teach us to write, listen, read and speak English. Why the need
for another one? Why would this one be better than all the others?

The answer is easy. Everyone wants to learn English quickly, that is not possible. It cannot
happen in a week or in a month. Learners need time to absorb the information, use the
language and listen to it as much as possible. That is why ‘time is not money’ as far as the
English language is concerned. Galileo Galilei said "We cannot teach people anything; we
can only help them discover it within themselves." That’s what you need to do – discover your
abilities and use them in your benefit.

This book helps you do that – every step is guided by useful language and real situations, key
vocabulary and grammar. It is a basic English course for beginners (starter level) that will help
you get in touch with the English language in the easiest way possible.

So, take the Easy way out and start studying English.

"Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything
new."

Adverbs of frequency - indicate the frequency of actions

ALWAYS→
USUALLY →
REGULARLY→
OFTEN→
SOMETIMES→
OCCASIONALLY→
SELDOM→
RARELY→
NEVER→

Put the adverbs in the right position.

1 It is warm in Lisbon. ( always)
2 It rains in the summer in Florida. (often)
3 I have a shower in the afternoon (always)
4 I go to bed late. (never)
Very important : we place the adverbs of frequency
- before the main verb I always have black coffee in the morning.
- after the verb to be You are never here!
Now try these. Put the word in brackets into the correct position.
1 I'm late. (never)

2 We don't see her. (often)

3 I take a long time in the shower. (always)

4 Sam arrives on time. (usually)

5 Our house isn't clean. (always)

6 Do you feel sad? (sometimes)

7 He brushes his teeth after lunch. (rarely)

34

Have/ has got

As a main verb “to have” implies the meaning of possession.

For example: I have a job. I have a car. I don't have any time.

When it is used to indicate possession you can say ‘I have...’ or ‘I have got...’

When you are talking about actions, you only use "have". For example:

Possession: I have a shower in my bathroom. I have got a shower in my bathroom.

I don't have a bath. I haven't got a bath.

The action: I have a shower every day. - I'm having a shower now.

Note - it does not take the continuous form "I having" - for that you have to use the auxiliary
verb be.

For example: “I am having a shower.” “Are you having a good time?"

Complete the blank spaces with the forms: have, has, haven’t, hasn’t .

I live with my wife in a small house. We(1) …’ve… got a bedroom, a living room, a kitchen and
a bathroom. We (2) ……. got a small garden – it’s beautiful. But we (3) ……… got a garage.
My wife (4) …… got a car. She drives to work every day. I (5) …………. got a car. I can’t
drive. But I (6) …………. got a bicycle.
