Education
Education
Education
changed the world in so many ways. What seemed odd though, is questioning whether true education is
only reflected in such changes. Well, what could be a more ultimate purpose of education other than
making a difference? The saying, “It takes a village to educate a child” implies that true education lies
way beyond classroom teaching and management. And here is why.
Ever since the dawn of civilization, we have been facing issues that challenge the greater good.
Conflicts, inequalities, prejudices, corruption, discrimination, and this list goes on. We were deprived of
rights, manipulated and controlled by an imperial power, and abused by those in “authority”. Not to
mention that these are still evident in the present times as if it’s a lasting viral trend on the internet.
However, this is not more disappointing than pointing out the fact that all of these happened when
people were starting to get educated. How come? How could we put the blame on something that
taught us to be literate, conscious, and aware? Is this how we should view education?
I think it would only go down to the saying that “knowledge is power”. In people’s conquest of
ideas, inventions, innovations, and advocacies, knowledge is essential. Humans, however, only acquire a
very minimal amount of this knowledge and immediately think they know everything. That’s where
everything goes wrong. This in turn results in war, misunderstanding, and indifference. The point is if
education aims to open the eyes of the people and to change the world for the better, why were the
biggest dilemmas in the world caused by educated ones? For generations of aristocrats, poets,
politicians, scientists, and philosophers, nothing was ever more important than acquiring trivial,
insignificant knowledge that does nothing about real change, and that is because education for most of
us is only about taking as much as we can get and taking advantage to those who do not know about it.
This is clearly not education.
I have come to realize that true education, like an eternal candlelit flame, lies under the tiniest of
things we can instill in people. Things that actually matter. While we bring raw knowledge, true
education means passing it on to generations with a much more meaningful purpose. While we educate
young minds to become keenly observant of what’s happening, true education means making them truly
mentally aware of how to utilize the knowledge they acquire in the right way. While we think education
is merely a gateway to get past poverty, true education means guiding people to become confident,
responsible, and respectful individuals who can contribute to society. Education enables us to witness
growth. It offers an opportunity to make a positive impact on people’s lives and futures.
