climate in San Salvador, from where she had just come. But as winter
approached, Mercedes began to shiver constantly.
One day, Mercedes woke up to see soft white flakes floating
down from the sky. “Mercedes, your first snow fall! Let’s go outside!”
called her aunt. Mercedes shivered and pulled the quilt more tightly
around her.

According to David Di Salvo, there are five characteristics of highly

respected achievers that make them different. One, respected achievers
are tenacious. They are unstoppable when it comes to seeking out ways of
reaching a goal. However, they do not resort to means that unnecessarily
harm others. Another hallmark of these people is their consistent
commitment. They do what they say they will do despite failure or
unforeseen circumstances. Still another distinct characteristic of respected
achievers is their sense of practicality. They focus on what practically works,
adjusting in any way until the desired outcome is achieved. A fourth hallmark
of respected achievers is their way of resolving a negative or painful
experience strategically called strategic resolution. The fifth one is
responsibility ownership. Respected achievers willingly and readily take or
own their responsibility in the event of any failure by the team even if other
members do not. The “Golden Rule” likewise guides their behavior.

RAILROADS

Railroads had become the major means of land transportation. They

had replaced earlier forms of travel like the stagecoach. For more than a
hundred years, railroads had remained the unchallenged leader among
transports. However, at the beginning of the early 19th century, railroads
competed with newer and modern forms of transportation.

Today, millions of people have their own cars and utility vehicles.
Buses offer cheap travel across countries. Trucks, long and large, transport
goods. Airplanes provide swift transportation over long distances and
across borders. Trains in many develop countries have been modernized.
Many countries build more railroads in underground tunnels and over
roads or highways to ease traffic. Railroad still provide low-cost, fuel-
saving, and quick transportation. Thus, railroads will remain important.

THAT BEAUTIFUL SUNDAY

I was walking home from Church last Sunday morning when I realized
how beautiful it was outside. The sun was shining. There was a cool breeze.
Everything seemed much more colorful. I decided that it would be the
perfect day to take a stroll in the nearby park and have some ice cream. I
got two scoops of strawberry ice cream on a Belgian cone from the first
vendor I saw. I found an empty bench and decided to sit down there. As I
was eating the ice cream, I watched the people walking past me. All of
them had cherry expressions, beaming smiles, and a ready “Hello!” It was
one of the most enjoyable walks I have had in months.
