KLSMC

This document is a qualification paper for the Kuala Lumpur Senior Maths Challenge containing 7 questions testing advanced math skills. The questions were created by math prefects and range in difficulty from concepts taught in Year 11 additional math to more challenging problems. The paper allows calculators and aims to help students select teams for the main challenge event while also serving as practice. It provides an opportunity for students from Years 11 to 13 to demonstrate and improve their mathematical abilities.

The Alice Smith School KLSMC Qualification Paper

Kuala Lumpur Senior Maths Challenge

Marks: 49
Time: 60 minutes

Welcome all to the inaugural Kuala Lumpur Senior Maths Challenge!

We made this paper to help you select your teams for the main event on March 9th 2024,
but feel free to use it just for practice, or for fun! Each question (and the relevant mark
scheme) was made personally by a Maths Prefect, and they are complex, so don’t expect
to get full marks within the time allotted. The questions are made so that the knowledge
required to answer them is of a Year 11 Add. maths student, but they will be challenging
for all students, Year 11 to 13.

The use of a calculator is allowed.

Best of luck,
The Maths and Computing Prefects - The Alice Smith School

Question 1: Saksham’s Silliness

Triangles △OAC and △BED are similar triangles with a scale factor of a 12 .

⃗ = 3a,
OA ⃗ = 5 b,
OB ⃗ = 1b
CD
7 3

∠ACO is equal to ∠EDB

a) Find BC [3]
⃗ = λBE
b) Given that BF ⃗ find an expression of BF
⃗ [2]
⃗ = µAC
c) Given that AF ⃗ find an expression of AF
⃗ [2]

d) Hence find the values of λ and µ [3]

Question 2: Daryl’s Dilemma

Let the first Fibonacci number be 1, then 1. The next Fibonacci number is defined as
the sum of the previous 2 numbers. Therefore, the series goes as follows: 1, 1, 2, 3. . .

Daryl does not have any friends. To change that, he looked to genie Derrick
and he said in a booming voice ‘List the first 6 Fibonacci numbers. Erase any
2 numbers of your choice, and instead, write down the sum of the 2 numbers
subtracted by 4. Repeat this process until one number remains. That is the
number of friends you will have.’ Daryl trembled under his mighty strength,
but his goal is to maximise the final number.

a) Write down the first 6 Fibonacci numbers, and state the sum. [1]
b) Consider how the sum changes after each step in the situation above. [2]
c) Write down the maximum final number of friends Daryl can have and why. [2]

Question 3: Yiqi’s Yapping

a) Find the derivative of:

[2]

b) For this question, we will be utilizing the fact that ⌊x⌋ refers to the integer
less than or equal to x. E.g.

⌊π⌋ = 3, ⌊6.1293⌋ = 6, ⌊log11 2⌋ = 0

Two friends, Hoelum and Eugene were kidnapped and put in a secret
lair deep underground after they both forgot the “+c” after an integral.
They find a staircase that leads up and down and decide to split up to
go up and down the staircase. Eugene decides to go up the staircase, the
upward path is modelled:

y = 2 log11 (⌊x⌋)

Sketch the graph that represents the first 5 steps that he will walk up
(y=0 is the starting floor which should not be considered the first step.)

[3]

(i) Recall that the integral of a function is the area under that function. Find:
Rn
1
2 log11 (⌊x⌋) dx
You are not expected to integrate this
[4]
(ii) Hoelum, foolishly, decides to go down the staircase where he will meet
his demise. The downward staircase is modelled with:
y = −2 log11 (⌊3 − 2x⌋)
Sketch the graph of the downward staircase for the first 5 steps (y=0
is again the starting floor and is not counted as the first step)

Question 4: Leiyi’s Loops

AM = 8, CM = 24, MD = 6, r = 3
Y is the perpendicular bisector of AB where AY = YB
AB intersects CD at 90 degrees.

a) Find the length of MB. [1]

b) Calculate the diagonal length PT, leaving your answer to 2 decimal places. [4]

c) Calculate the exact value of the radius of circle X. [5]

Question 5: Daryl In Danger

Daryl is scared of Sid. They are on the vertices of a rectangular prism such
that Daryl is as far away as possible from Sid. The sum of the length, width,
and height of the prism is known to be 20cm, and the surface area of the
prism is known to be 175cm2 .

a) Let the length, width, and height of the prism be a,b,c and form 2 equations. [2]

b) Find the distance between Daryl and Sid. Considering that Sid’s biceps can punch
16.4cm through the ground, in a straight line directly to Daryl, will Daryl get
brutally destroyed by the punch, or will he live to see another day?
Hint: Consider (a + b + c)2 [4]

Question 6 Huan Sha’s Hazard

The evil villain Kaitlynn wrote three secret two-digit numbers, x, y, and z
on a napkin. Huan Sha must name three numbers, A, B, and C, after which
Kaitlynn will announce the value of Ax + By + Cz. If Huan Sha can then
name Kaitlynn’s three secret numbers, Kaitlynn will let Huan Sha go. Save
Huan Sha! Come up with a way of choosing A, B, and C such that Huan Sha
is sure to escape Kaitlynn’s evil clutches. [3]
