I. Introduction

In the lively community of Barangay Northern Poblacion in Calamba, Misamis

Occidental, a complex social happening has cast a shadow over the lives of its youth—

gang life. The study "Behind the Shadows: Unveiling the Realities of Gang Life" dig into

the intricate dynamics, influences, and consequences of the growing gang culture within

this community.

As the once tight-knit community struggles with the emergence of gangs, it

becomes vital to understand the involved factors that contribute to their formation and

persistence. This case study seeks to shed light on the underlying motivations, social

conditions, and day-to-day experiences that draw young individuals into the shadows of

gang connection.

While the ideal face of Barangay Northern Poblacion may present a picture of a

peaceful community, the realities beneath the surface reveal a different narrative. The

influence of gang life spread through the form of daily existence for many youth,

impacting not only their personal lives but also the overall social bond within the

barangay.

This study aims to go beyond the notion and assumptions surrounding gang life,

offering a distinct understanding of the root causes, challenges faced by gang-involved

youth, and the potential path for intervention and community-led solutions. By

unraveling the problem "Behind the Shadows," the research attempts to contribute

valuable insights that can inform policies, programs, and community initiatives aimed at
fostering a safer and more resilient environment for the residents of Barangay Northern

Poblacion.

II. General Objectives

The overall aim of the study "ALARM AND SCANDAL COMMITTED BY SUN

BOYS OF BARANGAY NORTHERN POBLACION CALAMBA, MUSAMIS

OCCIDENTAL" in Barangay Northern Poblacion, Calamba, Misamis Occidental, is to

comprehensively investigate and understand the dynamics, influences, and consequences

of gang involvement among the youth in the community. The general objectives of this

study are as follows:

1. To identify and examine the underlying factors and root causes that contribute to the

formation and sustenance of youth gangs in Barangay Northern Poblacion, Calamba.

2. To analyze the social and economic factors that influence individuals to join gangs,

considering the broader community context and socio-economic conditions.

3. To discover the day-to-day experiences, challenges, and realities faced by individuals

involved in gang life, considering their perspectives and narratives.

4. To assess the impact of gang life on the overall social dynamics, bond, and safety

within Barangay Northern Poblacion, Calamba examining both direct and indirect

consequences.

5. To evaluate the coping mechanisms employed by individuals involved in gang life,

exploring how they navigate challenges and adversities within the community.
6. To identify potential intervention points and strategies for community-led initiatives,

social programs, and policies aimed at mitigating the impact of gang life on the youth.

7. To contribute knowledge and insights that empower the community of Barangay

Northern Poblacion, Calamba to actively address the challenges associated with gang life

and work towards fostering a safer and more resilient environment.

8. To provide evidence-based recommendations for local policymakers, community

leaders, and relevant stakeholders to develop targeted policies and programs addressing

the problems of the gang involvement.


III. Specific Objectives

1. To create a comprehensive demographic profile of individuals involved in gangs

within Barangay Northern Poblacion, Calamba, Misamis Occidental including age,

gender, educational background, and socio-economic status.

2. To identify and analyze specific social and economic determinants that act as root

causes for youth involvement in gang activities, examining factors such as poverty,

unemployment, and educational opportunities.

3. To explore the influence of family dynamics on gang involvement, investigating

aspects such as family structure, parental involvement, and the presence of role models.

4. To document the daily experiences, routines, and challenges faced by individuals

engaged in gang life, providing insights into their social interactions, responsibilities, and

coping mechanisms.

5. To analyze the role of peer pressure and social networks in recruiting and retaining

individuals within gangs, understanding the dynamics of social influence within the

community.

6. To assess the impact of gang involvement on educational pursuits, examining school

attendance, academic performance, and the influence of gang affiliation on educational

aspirations.

7. To evaluate the extent of involvement in criminal activities among gang members,

examining the types of offenses committed and their impact on community safety.
8. To explore gender-specific dynamics within gangs, understanding the roles and

experiences of both male and female members, and how gender influences their

involvement and status within the gang.

9. To provide specific recommendations for community-led intervention strategies,

considering the unique context of Barangay Northern Poblacion and the insights gained

from the study.

10. To contribute findings that can inform the development of local policies aimed at

addressing the complex issue of gang involvement, fostering community safety, and

empowering the youth.


IV. Orientation

The Barangay Northern Poblacion, was once called north-eastern as it is situated

Northeast of Calamba, during the time of President Ferdinand E. Marcos, with Atty.

Lorenzo de Guzman as Mayor of Municipality of Calamba, Misamis Occidental. The

entire Poblacion was sub-divided into four sectors namely: Solinog,

Southwestern and tres de Mayo now (Don Bernardo A. Neri) for political and economic

reasons. It has an area of about 68,9593 hectares, bounded on the following boundaries;

North – Barangay Langub

South – Barangay Solinog

East – Barangay Calaran

West – Barangay Southwestern Poblacion

The entire contour of this Barangay is somewhat plain land and mostly planted

with coco trees and few farmlands, no bridges, no rivers except for few creeks.

It has a starting population about 1884 more or less, with complete elementary

school up to grade six and day care center and one private elementary school and one

private high school registered min the name of Sacred Heart College.
The dialect spoken is usually Visayan Cebuano and most of the people are Christians and

so far, there are less Muslims. The peace and order situations of this Barangay is quite

normal, peaceful and orderly.

As to agriculture products, the family household relies on copra-products, corn,

bananas, root crops and others with only few household owning large cattle, swine and

poultry.

There are also some commercial business establishments around the area, and n4

(four) super tower namely: PLDT STATION, PILTEL-CELL SITE, SMART, GLOBE

and LIBERTY Broadcasting network, Inc.

Political Subdivision

Barangay Northern Poblacion has 4 Puroks. It became a Barangay in the year

1974 under the leadership of the Late Ferdinand E. Marcos with Atty. Lorenzo

de Guzman, Mayor of Municipality of Calamba.

Land Area

The Barangay Northern Poblacion has the total land area of about 155.6751 hectares.

Topography and Land Classification

The entire contour of this Barangay Northern Poblacion is somewhat plain land and

mostly planted with coco trees and few farmland, no bridges and no rivers except for

some creeks.
Soil Types

The soil type of all part of the Barangay is classified as GUIMBOLAN. It is characterized

as generally deep to very deep, well drained, clayed texture of various surface colors.

Brown to dark brown, dark yellowish brown, and dark brown and yellowish brown. The

color changes depending on soil texture and

extend of erosion. Coconut enter planted with bananas and some other fruit trees are the

most suitable to this type of soil.

Climate and rainfall

The Barangay Northern Poblacion with the Municipality is under the type IV climate

classification with no pronounced dry or wet-season. This climate is characterized as

moist, with an average rainfall of 2,278.7mm throughout the year. The wettest period

over an eight mos. Period from May to December, however, the rainiest month are in the

last quarter of the year from October to December when 40% of the rainfall is recorded.

While sparse rain showers are experienced during the remaining months, the driest month

are February, March and April.

VISION

To implement a change in our Barangay Northern Poblacion and make it into a

progressive barangay for the benefit of everyone, pitting more emphasis on the health

services for every person, infrastructure, livelihood projects and social waste segregation

management.
MISSION

Draw the barangay closer to the people and incite them to bestow maximum trust,

which is indispensable in attaining the desired outcome on the implementation of

multifarious programs and projects that will lead to a well-developed calm discipline and

God-like community. Delivering the services is our top priority to meet the people

expectations.
V. Discussion

In order for us researcher to gather data, we conduct observation, survey and interview.

The following respondents are living in Purok 3 of Barangay Northern Poblacion which

has the most population and the center of the barangay. We have 5 respondents. The

surveys are test questionnaires; it has 1 question answerable by "Yes or No" and 9

supporting questions. All questions are all about involving gangs in the community. Most

of the Male Youth in the purok are members in the same group of gangs. One of the main

reasons why they are being involved in gang groups is because they want to meet a new

circle of friends. The gang group also participates in the community activity like "clean-

up drive" in order for them to help the community. We the researchers found out in our

interview to our respondents that joining in the gang group it's not just for making trouble

in the community but the main reason is to be a member in the community willing to help

and serve the people in the community.


VI. INTERPRETATION AND ANALYSIS OF THE COMPARISONS OF
ALL SITUATIONS AND OBSERVATIONS

According to the data that we gathered; we have discovered that more male youth are

members in the gang group at Barangay Northern Poblacion. Due to the educational

background of the youth they are willing to join the group I order for them to meet new

friends. In examining the shadows of gang life in the said barangay, delve into the socio-

economic factors, lack of opportunities and systematic issues that contribute to gang

involvement. It will analyze the impact on individuals and communities, considering the

interplay of poverty, education and social structures. Seek connections to comprehend the

complexities surrounding gang dynamics in the Barangay Northern Poblacion for a

comprehensive interpretation.
VII. Conclusions

Gang violence is a national concern that has had a severe impact on society,

leading to a rapid decline in social values and the disintegration of traditional Cultures.

Furthermore, gang violence has negative consequences in other areas of life,including

school and the neighborhood, which serves as everyone's second home and playground. It

affects both students and teachers or even young ones in physical, psychological,

emotional, and academic aspects of their lives to create a solid and good relationship in

school and the community. Gang violence victims suffered those challenges and once

those challenges have ended, begins the struggle of students on how to regain the interest

towards changing lives for the better.

On the shadows of gang life involves acknowledging the complex interplay of

social, economic, and systemic factors contributing to gang involvement. Emphasize the

urgency of addressing root causes, promoting community-based interventions, and

advocating for policies that focus on prevention and rehabilitation. Highlight the

importance of a holistic approach involving education, mentorship, and community

support to break the cycle of gang life.


VIII. RECOMMENDATION

In the context of a barangay, recommendations for addressing the shadows of gang life

could include:

1. Community Outreach and Education: Implement awareness programs within the

barangay to educate residents about the consequences of gang involvement and ways to

prevent it.

2. Youth Engagement Programs: Establish constructive activities, such as sports, arts,

and vocational training, to engage youth positively and provide alternatives to gang

participation.

3. Collaboration with Local Authorities: Strengthen collaboration between barangay

officials, law enforcement, and community leaders to address gang-related issues

collectively, ensuring a coordinated approach.

4. Family Support Initiatives: Develop support systems for families affected by gang

involvement, offering counseling and resources to strengthen family bonds and address

underlying issues.

5. Skill Development and Employment Opportunities: Create programs that focus on

skill development and job placement for youth, empowering them with opportunities for

a better future.

6. Community Policing: Implement community policing strategies that build trust

between law enforcement and residents, fostering a safer environment and preventing the

escalation of gang activities. These recommendations aim to create a holistic and


community-driven approach to mitigate the factors contributing to gang life in the

barangay.
