03-Creator Mindset

This document discusses shifting one's mindset from a consumer to a producer in order to become a high-performing creator. It identifies three common hurdles that stop people from creating: 1) the curse of knowledge bias, where people think ideas are obvious when others may not be aware; 2) imposter syndrome bias, where experts paradoxically feel less confident; and 3) distraction and addiction to cheap dopamine from social media and phones. The document provides tips for overcoming these hurdles such as limiting social media time, using website blockers, and focusing energy on creating instead of repeatedly checking past work.

Creator Mindset
I cannot stress this enough:

To be a high-performing creator, you must shift your mindset—from a consumer to a producer.

It doesn't mean you stop consuming entirely. But it does mean you become a producer first,
consumer second.

The Paradigm Shift

1. Spend less time on social media consuming other creators' work.

It's essential to take in great art for inspiration, but the thinnest line is between learning and
procrastinating.

2. When consuming art (books, movies, documentaries, online content), approach it with
a producer mindset.

When you come across popular media, ask:

What elements are working here? What hidden truth was exposed to the audience? (Hidden
truth = articulating what everyone has felt but nobody has said).

It's like that test-taking tip where students should ask: Why is this question being created?
What's being tested here?

You need to get in the mind of the professor, or else you'll always be a student. Similarly, you
need to get in the mind of a producer, or you'll always be a consumer.

Of course, everybody is both at once. Choose to be a producer first, consumer second.

3 common hurdles stop people from creating

Let's break them down.

Creator Hurdle 1: The Curse of Knowledge (Cognitive Bias)

We believe that everyone knows the same things we do.

Example: You decide not to write a post about sleep tips because you think everyone already
knows them or it's been done before.

There's so much we think is obvious that people have never heard. It's our job to synthesize and
spread meaningful, useful ideas (even if we did not originate them).

We simply need to put our unique spin on it and give credit where credit is due.

Newton

Creator Hurdle 2: Imposter Syndrome (Cognitive Bias)

Novices experience overconfidence due to quick progression on the learning curve.

While experts' confidence drops because they realize what they don't yet know.

Paradoxically, the more you become an expert, the more you may feel like an imposter.
Understanding Dunning-Kruger Effect is step #1 to beating Imposter Syndrome.

You'll see these negative feelings simply for what they are: Bias.

Feeling like an imposter may actually be a signal that you're READY.

If you struggle with imposter syndrome, try this:

Summarize a book that you love: Document your takeaways and post them!

This is a great way to build your brand (especially when you're just starting).

Creator Hurdle 3: Distraction and Cheap Dopamine

There's a common refrain in Silicon Valley that if you aren't paying for the product, you are the
product.

As shared in the documentary The Social Dilemma: "There are only two industries that call their
customers users: illegal drugs and software."

Now, this is a course about social media growth. And I'm proud to be teaching a brand of
content creation that's useful and actionable content. The type of content I believe will enrich the
users of these platforms.

But we cannot control what other people are creating on them or the mechanisms employed by
the platforms to keep people addicted.

How I combat:

● Try digital intermittent fasting. This could mean not checking your phone 2+ hours before
bed and 2+ hours after you wake up in the morning.
● You might also try website blockers and screen-time management like Freedom (for
desktop) and Opal (for iOS mobile).

The simple truth is: you are either being proactive or reactive—creating your dreams or serving
someone else's (even if involuntarily).

And lastly, limit your checking activity (I'm guilty as anyone for this).

Once you put your post into the world, you've done your job. Keep showing up and creating the
best work you can, and the score will take care of itself. Think about how much time and
brainpower is wasted by repeatedly checking on your past posts. That energy could be directed
to your next valuable work instead.

Lesson Summary

Everybody deserves to be a creator—whether you are starting and documenting your progress
(which I recommend everyone does) or establishing your authority based on specialized
knowledge you already have. The time to create is now.
