System components 2.1

Magnet system 0

The magnet system generates the basic magnetic field. The components required are
described below. The electrical and mechanical shim are integrated into the gradient coil.

Magnet - MAG
The magnet system comprises the superconductive magnet, including the systems for
cooling (interface for helium fill/refill, cold head), energizing (fixed current leads) and mon-
itoring the magnet during operation.
The magnet is cooled by a conventional 4K cold head which allows helium to recondense
and reduces helium boil-off to zero during operation.

Magnet supervision - MSUP

This component provides the following: it supervises and controls the magnet during oper-
ation, it ramps it down in emergency situations (ERDU), and it provides user-accessible
operating controls for the magnet system.

Magnet covers - COV

The magnet covers consist of the front, back and side covers, the turret covers, the aper-
tures including all mechanisms required for installing the covers, as well as the components
located directly underneath the covers. The magnet cover is designed to provide the mag-
net with a self-supporting, noise absorbent enclosure. The equipment required for the tun-
nel lighting, patient ventilation, and light localizer is also incorporated into the magnet
covers.

E-shim
The component required to supply the shim coil for adjusting the A(2,0) term is located in
the E-shim power supply (1channel). Please be aware that only one channel is available
(not five, as in other systems). The E-shim is a standard component in all MAGNETOM
ESSENZA systems.

Passive shim
The passive shim includes the shim trays, the hardware to attach and install them, as well
as the set of shim plates and the insulation between the iron shims.

Magnet power supply - MPS

The magnet power supply consists of the unit which energizes and de-energizes the mag-
net, including the charge cable to the magnet, the cabling for the voltage supply, and Mag-
net Supervision. As a service tool, the MPS is not part of the delivery volume of the MR
system and is brought on-site only as required.

System introduction 9

Array shim device - ASD

The array shim device is a service and installation tool for magnet shimming. It consists of
such components as mechanical supports, MR probes, preamplifier, multiplexer, etc., used
to measure the magnetic field via the shim plot. As a service tool, the array shim device is
not part of the delivery volume of the MR system and is brought on-site only as required.

Gradient system 0

In addition to the basic magnetic field, the gradient system generates linear dynamic mag-
netic field gradients in the three spatial orientations. The gradient system includes the gra-
dient power amplifier (GPA) and the gradient coil.

Gradient power amplifier - GPA

The gradient power amplifier consists of the components necessary for generating and reg-
ulating the gradient currents. This includes the power line filter, the gradient power supply
lines, and the electronics for monitoring the temperature of the gradient coils. Unlike in the
previous 1.5T systems, the GPA forms part of the Electronic CAbinet (ECA) rather than
using a cabinet of its own.

Gradient coil - GC
The gradient coil comprises the coil systems for generating the gradient fields, the system
for cooling the coil, as well as the sensors for temperature monitoring plus the hardware for
installing the coil in the magnet. The gradient coil also includes the compartments for pas-
sive shimming of the magnet's main field and the A(2,0) shim coil.

RF system 0

The RF system generates the RF-fields and transmits them to the patient (transmit func-
tion). It also receives the MR signals emitted by the patient and provides the signals in dig-
ital format for image reconstruction (receive system).

RF small signal init - RFSU

The RFSU converts the digitally modulated transmit signal from the PCI_STAR (control
unit) into the required system frequency in the range of 63.6MHz and sends it to the RFPA.
Parallel to this, the RFSU receives the analog MR signals from the examination, mixes
them down to an intermediate frequency of about 1MHz, and performs an analog-to-digital
conversion before they are sent to the PCI_RX.

RF power amplifier
The RFPA amplifies the RF signal generated in the RF small signal unit to the amplitude
necessary for exciting hydrogen nuclei (1H). The RFPA generates the RF power required
for the body resonator. For diagnostic applications, the defining parameters are peak and
continuous output as well as the reproducibility of pulse patterns, i.e., temporal stability,
since these parameters represent the prerequisite technical conditions for realizable exam-
ination protocols and the reproducibility of examination results. Currently, it is identical to
the DORA used in the Symphony and Avanto systems.

10 System introduction

RF application system
The RF application system functions as a switchboard in the examination room for the var-
ious RF channels in the system. It also functions as a preamplifier for the MR signals
(RCCS_60) and decouples the RF measurement signals at the resonator via the integrated
measurement unit. The RF cables routed to the resonators as well as the transmit lines
from the filter plate to the BCCS (which is identical to Avanto) are also part of the RF appli-
cation system. The functional scope of the RFAS includes the measurement unit for decou-
pling the RF measurement signals at the resonator and the TAS on the filter plate.

RF infrastructure - RFIS_60
Within the scope of the RF system, the water-cooled RFIS_60 provides the RF compo-
nents in the examination room with the necessary control signals and operating voltages.
The RFIS_60 is located directly at the magnet.

RF filter - RFFIL
MR examinations are performed in an RF-shielded room or cabin which protects against
external interference and unacceptable RF exposure. This room as well as the RF-sealed
feed-throughs for the cables are part of the RF filter plate.

Body coil - BC
The system includes a whole-body coil for emitting RF to the patient and for receiving MR
signals from the patient. The body coil also includes the tuning unit for adjusting the reso-
nator to the power amplifier based on the frequency. The support tube of the body resona-
tor also serves as the inner lining of the magnet bore.

IsoCenter matrix coil- ICM

This new design of a fixed spine array coil is permanently mounted into the body coil bore
tube and will be underneath the patient table when the patient is positioned inside the mag-
net.
Subsequently, no large spine array coil has to be carried around by the radiographer and
the coil is always perfectly centered.

Local coils - LC
RF local coils improve image quality in examinations of specific body regions. The range of
available coils is constantly expanded as new applications are developed. Approximately
80% of all examinations are performed with head and spine coils. However, orthopedic
coils as well as special coils are utilized when examining other areas, such as the rectum
or peripheral vessels.

Patient handling 0

The system handling function covers all requirements and includes such components as
the patient table, lighting, ventilation, and patient monitoring. Prior to the MR examination,
the patient is positioned on the table; the positioning accessories are used for additional
comfort. The patient is then moved into the magnet bore. During the examination, the
patient is monitored accordingly, via video camera or other means.

System introduction 11

Patient table - PTAB

The patient table is used to position as well as move the patient into the magnet bore. The
motor-assisted table movement is controlled via the front control unit located at the left side
of the magnet. The patient table is designed for partial body applications of up to 1.4m. The
total horizontal movement range is 2.05m.
The MAGNETOM ESSENZA patient table is available in two versions:
• Standard version without vertical drive
• Optional version with vertical drive

Intercom - COM
Since the patient is usually alone in the examination room during the measurements, the
patient and the physician communicate via the intercom. The intercom consists of the the
examination room components, the operating console components, and the necessary
cabling.

Patient monitoring - VID

Whenever required (when there is no direct face-to-face interaction between physician and
patient such as through a window), the patient is monitored during the examination via a
video camera. The setup consists of the camera, the monitor, and the cabling.

System control 0

System control comprises all of the system's computer functions: host computer, image
reconstruction, measurement control, and physiological signal acquisition. The system
control is the main communications interface for the overall system. It converts examination
protocols or user input to the corresponding control signals and transmits these signals to
the relevant components via a main control bus. It also monitors the functional status of the
various subcomponents and processes these accordingly for system monitoring.

Host computer - HOST

The hardware comprising the host computer includes all processor components required
for patient management, image handling (image computation, display, post-processing,
evaluation, hardcopy documentation, and archiving), and measurement sequence pro-
gramming. This includes all elements of the processor's user interface: monitors, satellite
console, power distribution MRC, keyboards, mouse, data carriers, etc.

Measurement And Reconstruction System - MARS

This new component contains the MR Image Reconstruction system (MRIR) and the
Advanced Measurement Control (AMC) in one single computer system.
The image reconstruction system computes the final images from the digitized receive sig-
nals of the RF small signal unit.
The measurement control controls the peripheral components within the time frame set for
the MR measurement.

Siemens M4-060.850.10.01.02 Page 11 of 20 MAGNETOM

Medical Solutions 12.06 CS SD MR
12 System introduction

Physiological Measurement Unit - PMU

The optional PMU acquires the ECG signals, the pulse, and the respiration of the patient
and forwards them to the MARS. The PMU electronics are installed within the patient table
electronics and comprise all sensors, voltage supplies, and cables for communication with
the MARS. The sensors are connected to the PMU via a wireless connection.

In-room MRC
With the optional in-room MRC, you can start measurements inside the examination room
and check the images immediately.

System supply (mains, cooling water) 0

Power distribution system - PDS

The power distribution system supplies the components with electrical power. The power
distributor ensures that the system is connected as specified at a central point to the power
supply side of the system. The power distributor provides the different components with
individually fuse-protected supply voltages. The main power distributor is located in the
main electronics cabinet, which includes space for installing additional components.

Integrated cooling system - ICS

The main power-consuming components of the system are water-cooled. Cooling is per-
formed with water at a temperature of 20 C. This keeps condensation from building up on
the cooled electronics components and eliminates the need for complicated insulation
measures, as long as basic values for temperature and humidity are maintained.
The ICS exists in two versions:
• ICS passive: a regulated water-water heat exchanger which discharges lost heat via
an existing cold water pipe network (on-site primary cold water).
• ICS active: the water can be tempered using a specially designed water cooler with an
external fan unit (EFU) which does not require any water cooling supply by the cus-
tomer.
An air conditioning system (ACS) built into the ICS provides air cooling for the components
in the ECA and a dedicated air cooling supply for the GPA.

System cabling - CABLE

The system cabling includes all control, signal, data, communications, and supply cables
that have to be attached to the system during on-site installation.

Software 0

syngo MR is the software application package. The software is based on syngo, the com-
mon software for all Siemens Medical systems. The software includes the system, applica-
tion, and measurement controller software. Only firmware modules directly assigned to
hardware components are not included. The system software includes functions required
by the user and technical service. These functions are:
