The MAGNETOM ESSENZA was developed from the ground up to be an affordable, reli-
able powerhouse that will support both clinical and financial success.
This ultra-short, lightweight 1.5T system delivers the flexibility, accuracy and speed of Tim
(Total imaging matrix), as well as a powerful new innovation: the IsoCenter Matrix coil,
which is a spine array fixed in the bottom part of the body coil.
The key features of the MAGNETOM ESSENZA are:
• 1.5 Tesla
• Most affordable, all new
• Tim [25x8]
• Head to toe applications, with a great bottom line
The block diagram below shows an overview of the MAGNETOM ESSENZA hardware
components.
The main functions of the MAGNETOM ESSENZA are as follows:
• Generation of the basic magnetic field (magnet)
• Generation of the gradient field (gradient)
• Generation and measurement of the radio-frequency field (RF)
• Patient handling and patient monitoring
• Measurement and reconstruction system (MARS)
• System supply (mains, cooling water)
• Software
The functions described above are executed via the respective system components.
Magnet system 0
The magnet system generates the basic magnetic field. The components required are
described below. The electrical and mechanical shim are integrated into the gradient coil.
Magnet - MAG
The magnet system comprises the superconductive magnet, including the systems for
cooling (interface for helium fill/refill, cold head), energizing (fixed current leads) and mon-
itoring the magnet during operation.
The magnet is cooled by a conventional 4K cold head which allows helium to recondense
and reduces helium boil-off to zero during operation.
E-shim
The component required to supply the shim coil for adjusting the A(2,0) term is located in
the E-shim power supply (1channel). Please be aware that only one channel is available
(not five, as in other systems). The E-shim is a standard component in all MAGNETOM
ESSENZA systems.
Passive shim
The passive shim includes the shim trays, the hardware to attach and install them, as well
as the set of shim plates and the insulation between the iron shims.
Gradient system 0
In addition to the basic magnetic field, the gradient system generates linear dynamic mag-
netic field gradients in the three spatial orientations. The gradient system includes the gra-
dient power amplifier (GPA) and the gradient coil.
Gradient coil - GC
The gradient coil comprises the coil systems for generating the gradient fields, the system
for cooling the coil, as well as the sensors for temperature monitoring plus the hardware for
installing the coil in the magnet. The gradient coil also includes the compartments for pas-
sive shimming of the magnet's main field and the A(2,0) shim coil.
RF system 0
The RF system generates the RF-fields and transmits them to the patient (transmit func-
tion). It also receives the MR signals emitted by the patient and provides the signals in dig-
ital format for image reconstruction (receive system).
RF power amplifier
The RFPA amplifies the RF signal generated in the RF small signal unit to the amplitude
necessary for exciting hydrogen nuclei (1H). The RFPA generates the RF power required
for the body resonator. For diagnostic applications, the defining parameters are peak and
continuous output as well as the reproducibility of pulse patterns, i.e., temporal stability,
since these parameters represent the prerequisite technical conditions for realizable exam-
ination protocols and the reproducibility of examination results. Currently, it is identical to
the DORA used in the Symphony and Avanto systems.
RF application system
The RF application system functions as a switchboard in the examination room for the var-
ious RF channels in the system. It also functions as a preamplifier for the MR signals
(RCCS_60) and decouples the RF measurement signals at the resonator via the integrated
measurement unit. The RF cables routed to the resonators as well as the transmit lines
from the filter plate to the BCCS (which is identical to Avanto) are also part of the RF appli-
cation system. The functional scope of the RFAS includes the measurement unit for decou-
pling the RF measurement signals at the resonator and the TAS on the filter plate.
RF infrastructure - RFIS_60
Within the scope of the RF system, the water-cooled RFIS_60 provides the RF compo-
nents in the examination room with the necessary control signals and operating voltages.
The RFIS_60 is located directly at the magnet.
RF filter - RFFIL
MR examinations are performed in an RF-shielded room or cabin which protects against
external interference and unacceptable RF exposure. This room as well as the RF-sealed
feed-throughs for the cables are part of the RF filter plate.
Body coil - BC
The system includes a whole-body coil for emitting RF to the patient and for receiving MR
signals from the patient. The body coil also includes the tuning unit for adjusting the reso-
nator to the power amplifier based on the frequency. The support tube of the body resona-
tor also serves as the inner lining of the magnet bore.
Local coils - LC
RF local coils improve image quality in examinations of specific body regions. The range of
available coils is constantly expanded as new applications are developed. Approximately
80% of all examinations are performed with head and spine coils. However, orthopedic
coils as well as special coils are utilized when examining other areas, such as the rectum
or peripheral vessels.
Patient handling 0
The system handling function covers all requirements and includes such components as
the patient table, lighting, ventilation, and patient monitoring. Prior to the MR examination,
the patient is positioned on the table; the positioning accessories are used for additional
comfort. The patient is then moved into the magnet bore. During the examination, the
patient is monitored accordingly, via video camera or other means.
Intercom - COM
Since the patient is usually alone in the examination room during the measurements, the
patient and the physician communicate via the intercom. The intercom consists of the the
examination room components, the operating console components, and the necessary
cabling.
System control 0
System control comprises all of the system's computer functions: host computer, image
reconstruction, measurement control, and physiological signal acquisition. The system
control is the main communications interface for the overall system. It converts examination
protocols or user input to the corresponding control signals and transmits these signals to
the relevant components via a main control bus. It also monitors the functional status of the
various subcomponents and processes these accordingly for system monitoring.
In-room MRC
With the optional in-room MRC, you can start measurements inside the examination room
and check the images immediately.
Software 0
syngo MR is the software application package. The software is based on syngo, the com-
mon software for all Siemens Medical systems. The software includes the system, applica-
tion, and measurement controller software. Only firmware modules directly assigned to
hardware components are not included. The system software includes functions required
by the user and technical service. These functions are:
