Read the following passage and choose the best option for the following questions about it.
Few people can embody the spirit of early America as much as Benjamin Franklin. He lived through
almost the whole of the eighteenth century, being born six years after, and dying ten years before it ended. In
this time he saw the American colonies grow from tiny settlements into a nation, and he also contributed much
to the development of the new state.
At the age of 17 Franklin ran away to Philadelphia. He had already received some training as a printer’s
apprentice, and this helped him seven years later, with his first publication, the Pennsylvania Gazette. He also
received a contract to do government printing work, which helped him to rise from his poor background to
become a successful entrepreneur. Some of his experience in business was shared in his famous Poor Richard’s
Almanak, which established his reputation throughout the American colonies. In another of his works, the
Autobiography, which was written toward the end of his life, he shows the same quite common sense.
He was deeply interested in science and natural history, and his experiments with electricity and
lightning led directly to the invention of the lightning rod. He was also interested in improving the conditions of
his fellow men. He was involved in a number of projects in his native Philadelphia, including the setting up of a
library, a university, a philosophical society, and–because he was a pragmatic man–a fire prevention service. In
1753 he became Postmaster–General of the colonies. Through this experience he began to develop the idea that
the colonies of North America should be a single nation. Later, he went to London to try to persuade the British
government to change the conditions, especially the taxes, that later led the American colonists into rebellion.
Whatever Benjamin Franklin’s personal feelings about the rebellion of the American states, he worked
hard to make it succeed. As ambassador to France, he encouraged the French to help George Washington. After
the war he attended the American constitutional congress. This was his last contribution, for he died later that
year. He is still fondly remembered by Americans as one of the creators of the United States.

texture.
Where do these fibers come from? The majority of paper is made from the plant fiber that comes from
trees. Millions are cut down, but new trees are planted in their place. Paper may be also made from things like

May 7th 1840 was the birthday of one of the most famous Russian composers of the nineteenth century: Peter Ilyich
Tchaikovsky, the son of a mining inspector. Tchaikovsky studied music as a child and later studied composition at the St.
Petersburg Conservatory. His greatest period of productivity occurred between 1876 and 1890, during which time he
enjoyed patronage of Madame von Meck, a woman he never met, who gave him a yearly living stipend. Madame von
Meck later terminated her friendship with Tchaikovsky, as well as his living allowance, when she, herself, was facing
financial difficulties. It was during the time of Madame von Meck’s patronage, however, that Tchaikovsky created the
music for which he is most famous, including the music for the ballets of “Swan Lake” and “The Sleeping Beauty”.
Tchaikovsky’s music, well-known for its rich melodic and sometimes melancholy passages, was one of the first that
brought serious dramatic music to dance. Before this, little attention had been given to the music behind the dance.
Tchaikovsky died ostensibly of cholera on November 6th 1893, though there are now some scholars who argue that he
committed suicide.

a second. Surviving in the music industry requires luck and patience, but most of all it requires an intricate knowledge of
how a record company functions. The process begins when a representative of a company’s Artist and Repertoire (A & R)
Department visits bars and night clubs, scouting for young, talented bands. After the representative identifies a promising
band, he or she will work to negotiate a contract with that band. The singing of this recording contract is a slow process.
A company will spend a long time investigating the band itself as well as current trends in popular music. During this
period, it is important that a band reciprocate with an investigation of its own, learning as much as possible about the
record company and making personal connections within the different departments that will handle their recordings.
Once a band has signed the contract and has finished recording an album, the Publicity and Promotion department
takes over. This department decides whether or not to mass produce and market the band’s album. Most bands fail to
make personal contacts in this second department, thus losing their voice in the important final process of producing and
marketing their album. This loss of voice often contributes to the band’s failure as a recording group.

In the early years of television, educational specialists believed that it would be very useful in teaching
and learning. Many schools have brought television sets, intending to use them effectively to improve the
quality of education; but actually they are rarely used properly in classrooms. Meanwhile, children spend the
majority of their out-of-school hours watching TV and their typical school days proceed as if television did not
exist.
There are some explanations for the failure of television to get the interest of the teachers. Firstly, the
schools that purchased television sets have not set aside money for equipment repairs and maintenance so these
television sets are sooner and later out of work. Secondly these schools have not found an effective way to train
teachers to integrate television into their ongoing instructional programs. Lastly, most teachers do not regard
the quality of television and its usefulness in the classroom.
Teachers at the schools work hard for at least twelve years to train their students to become good
readers. However, according a recent statistics, teenagers seldom spend their free time reading books and
newspapers but watching television instead.

Read the passage and choose the correct answer to each question below
GOOD NEIGHBOURS
The “Neighborhood Watch” scheme all started a few years ago in the quiet village of Mollington after a
number of burglaries in the village and the surrounding area. The residents of the village came up with the idea
that they themselves could keep an eye on their neighbors’ property while they were away on holiday. Since
then, and with the support of the government and police, more than 50,000 “Neighborhood Watch” schemes
have been set up all over the country.
The object of each “Watch” group is to reduce the opportunities that criminals have in any particular
street or area. Each resident who is a member of the scheme agrees to call the police whenever they see
something suspicious. Everything is done calmly and discreetly- it is the police who actually check out each
report and investigate what is happening. Residents who are part of the “Watch” are not supposed to act as
police or put themselves in any danger.
When a new Neighborhood Watch scheme is set up in an area, the first thing people notice is the large,
brightly colored “Neighborhood Watch” sign. This is a great deterrent to most burglars and vandals, because
very few of them will take a chance of breaking into someone’s house if the know that there is a high risk of
being seen by neighbors keeping a look-out. Burglars also know that people who are part of “Neighborhood
Watch” schemes are more likely to have fitted good locks to their doors and windows.
There’s another benefit, too. In the time since the “Neighborhood Watch” scheme came into existence,
there is growing evidence of a new community spirit. It is bringing people together as never before, and
encouraging people to care for each other. New friendships are being made, and contact is often established old
people living on their own, who are often the most frightened and the most at risk.
1. The “Neighborhood Watch” scheme in Mollington was started……….
A. because the police could not protect people. B. before any others in the country.
C. after 50,000 burglaries in the area. D. because some residents wanted to go away for a holiday.
2. When members of a “Watch” group see suspicious individuals, they……………
A. try and frighten them away. C. try and arrest them.
B. contact the police. D. call the other members of the “Watch” group.
3. When a new “Watch scheme starts in an area,………………….
A. people fit new locks to their doors and windows. B. the police send fewer officers to the area.
C. burglars are less likely to break into houses. D. residents put signs on their doors.
4. One other benefit of “Watch” scheme is that……………
A. people get to know each other well. B. members of the “Watch” look after old people.
C. different kinds of people are attracted to live in the area. D. old people are no longer frightened of crime.
5. In general, the author seems to think that…………..
A. the police should do more to protect people.
B. “Watch” schemes are not very useful in reducing crime.
C. the “Neighborhood Watch” schemes have been successful.
D. It is hard to have any privacy in a “Neighborhood Watch” area.

A NOBLE GIFT
One of the most famous monuments in the world, the Statute of Liberty, was presented to the United
States of America in the nineteenth century by the people of France. The great statute, which was designed by
the sculptor Auguste Bartholdi, took ten years to complete. The actual figure was made of copper supported by
a metal framework which had been specially constructed by Eiffel. Before it could be transported to the United
States, a site had to be found for it and a pedestal had to be built. The site chosen was an island at the entrance
of New York Harbor. By 1884, a statute which was 151 feet high, had been erected in Paris. The following
year, it was taken to pieces and sent to America. By the end of October 1886, the statue had been put together

1……………Ice skating has a history of thousands of years. Archaeologists have discovered skates made from
animal bone. It seems that bone skates were used until the introduction of iron into Scandinavia about the year
200 AD. Among the Scandinavian upper classes, skating was seen as an essential skill.
2. ……..……In the early twentieth century, skating was stylish and reserved, but at the 1924 Winter Olympics,
11-year-old Sonja Hinnies introduced a more athletics attitude which inspired a new wave of popularity.
Nowadays art and athletics are combined and modern skating is both graceful and physically demanding.
3. ………..…For beginners, balance and control are all important and speed can only increase with proficiency.
The position of your body plays a great part in balance. Legs slightly bowed and the knees bent keep the body
weight centered; in effect the body leans slightly forward in this position. For skating, probably more than any
other sport or recreation, relaxation is vital.
4. ……………For the skating position, the heels should almost be touching and the feet should be turned
outwards. While pushing toward with a back foot, you make a very small movement with the other foot. Fairly
easy, isn’t it? If you can keep this up for a while, you can then slowly increase the length of your movements as
you gain experience.
5. ……..……Knowing how to fall must be learnt among the skater’s first skills. Even the best of the
professionals fall. In order to fall without injury, you should be as relaxed as possible. In this way the sock of
hitting the ice is lessened. To get up, use your hands to get into a kneeling position, then stand.
6. ………..…One you have learnt to move on the ice with confidence, there are various styles to be practiced-
figure skating, free styles, distance, speed, skating pairs, and so on- but the basics of them all, and by far the
best approach, it first to learn figures can soon be learn figure skating and then elementary freestyle. With
proper guidance available at most of the ice rinks, the basic figures can soon be learnt and the turns, jumps, and
spins or elementary free style will so follow.
7. ………..…If you look at any good of professional skater, you will see how relaxed they are and how easily
they move. To achieve this, an exercise program should be regularly practised. It can be dangerous to skate
with a stiff body and warm up exercises should at least include those for the legs, back and shoulders, with
special emphasis on the ankles and the knees. After a long or intense session, the same exercises should be used
afterwards to avoid stiffness.
8…………..…Skating improves balance, co-ordination, relaxation and movement. It improves heart and lung
activity and generally strengthens the body. Combined with swimming or jogging, it provides a great program
for all-round health and fitness.

Read the passage below and chose the correct answer for each question.
Much of the great the progress the human race has made during the past four centuries has been brought
about by new inventions. The machines man has created do much of the hard work which he had to do
previously. As a result, people who live today have much easier lives with more time for recreation than people
who lived several hundred years ago.
We should think, therefore, that everybody would welcome a new invention and honor the inventor.
Buy this has not always been true. A Frenchman named Thimonnier invented a sewing machine in 1830. This
machine made it possible for one tailor to do the work of several; and it also made his work much easier. But
instead of welcoming the new invention, the tailors smashed the machine to pieces. They feared that it would
throw many of them out of work.
However, if an invention is a good one, in time it is practically always accepted. The sewing machine
was improved and found to be a good invention for tailors as well as for others. It caused ready-made clothes to
become much less expensive, so that more people could buy them. Then more tailors instead of fewer were
needed.

B. they wanted to keep the traditional of making everything by hand
C. they feared these machines would take away their jobs

3. Which of the following sentences is NOT true?

B. In time, good inventions are nearly always accepted by people.

D. The sewing machine made clothes cheaper.

Read the following passage and choose the best answer to each question given.
People usually complain that they never have enough time to accomplish tasks. The hours and minutes
seem to slip away before many planned chores get done. According to time management experts, the main
reason for this is that most people fail to set priorities about what to do first. They get tied down by trivial, time-
consuming matters and never complete the important ones.
One simple solution often used by those at the top is to keep lists of tasks to be accomplished daily. These
lists order jobs from most essential to least essential and are checked regularly through the day to access
progress. Not only is this an effective way to imagine time, but also it serves to give individuals a much-
deserved sense of satisfaction over their achievements. People who do not keep lists often face the end of the
work with uncertainty over the significance of their accomplishments, which over time can contribute to serious
problems in mental and physical health.

Choose the best answer:
Money is something we all take for granted in our lives. Some of us may wish we had more of it but we all
recognise it when we see it, whether in the form of coins, notes or cheques. It is difficult to imagine how people
managed without money. In the earliest periods of human history, people used to exchange goods directly.
They would exchange things they had plenty of for things that they were in need of. For example, they might
offer food for tools. This method of exchange, which is known as “barter”, has many disadvantages. Certain
goods may be difficult to carry, they may not last long, or may be impossible to divide into smaller units. It can
also be difficult to know the worth of something compared with other goods.
According to historians, the first money, in the sense we understand it today, consisted of gold coins
produced about 2,500 years ago. Gold, being a very precious metal, was a suitable material. The introduction of
gold coins was acceptable to everyone and they were still being used at the beginning of this century, although
they have now been replaced by paper money and coins made of ordinary metals.

Read the text below and then answer the questions 1 – 8.
THE WORLD AND ITS GLOBAL ECONOMY
The world as man knows it today is getting smaller and smaller because of technology such as the Internet and
high speed modems. In fact, on March 3, 2005, a man flew entirely around the globe without refueling or stopping in a
one-person jet. The world is changing the world, and as the 21 st century continues, the global economy will play a larger
and larger role. As Thomas Friedman so eloquently put it in Lexus and the Olive Tree, globalization is "the inexorable
integration of markets, nation-states, and technologies to a degree never witnessed before."
A With today's technology it is possible for people to solicit business from the far side of the globe. B A
company like Dell Computers can order parts from several different countries, take shipment in North Carolina where the
new computers will be assembled, and then ship them to all regions of the globe . C An American oil firm can do a
satellite survey in Siberia for oil deposits and then contract with a Russian oil firm to drill the actual well, while the
petroleum engineer, acting as the project supervisor, remains in the US and runs the project by using a computer, a high
speed Internet connection, and a cellular telephone for quick questions. D
A global economy poses some serious problems. If a company doesn't act fast enough, it can lose, and if the company
loses heavily, what will happen to the employees working for the company, and then in turn what will happen to the
stores that depend on those employees buying their goods? As can be seen, there is a definite trickle-down effect. How is
the child who is about to graduate from high school supposed to decide on what career field to enter? A career field that is
here today might be gone long before the child can graduate from college, so not only does it become vital that a person
gain the needed knowledge to enter a given career field, but the person also needs to learn how to learn. Learning how to
learn may prove to be even more necessary than the knowledge needed to enter a given career field. A person who is good
at learning how to learn can quickly adapt to changes in the global economy by quickly preparing to enter other career
fields if his job is here today, but gone in the morning.
If the world turns into a global economy, a person will need to be able to get along and work with people from
different cultural backgrounds. However, unless a person has spent time living in different parts of the world, this might
be hard to do. While many students from foreign countries, especially the Asian countries, come to the US to earn a
graduate degree, how many students from the US spend even a semester abroad studying in another country? The answer
to this question is of course a very small percentage.
While individuals from some of foreign countries and some individuals from the US and the US economy will
adjust to globalization, will the rest of the world? Mass media are more than willing to continue to stir the pot of
controversy as they not only have to learn how to report the positive news, but also dole out a continuous stream of
negative news. When a person in a developing country sees all the cars on the streets of Beijing, of course that person
wants a car so he can show his neighbor how wealthy he is, and all this does is promote unneeded consumption. Why
does the person who has nowhere to go and no money to spend for travel want to own a car? The simple answer is
because the media paint owning a car as a symbol of wealth and it is human nature to want to become wealthy or at least
to appear wealthy.
On the positive side, as prices rise due to increased demands on scarce resources, there will be an incentive to
find affordable alternatives. For example, as the price of oil rises and along with it the price of a gallon of gasoline, a
point will be reached at which people are no longer willing to purchase gasoline so they can drive their cars, and they will
demand both alternative transportation methods and cars which use another source of energy. A current online survey
says $2.50 per gallon of gasoline is the point at which the people in the US will start making demands on the auto
manufacturer, which will open up new career fields in a few countries that have the technology needed to meet the
demands; however, people around the globe will work together on it.
