1. With the OLS procedure in the case of two independent or explanatory
variables, derive (a) normal Eq. (D2), (b) normal Eq. (D3), and (c) normal
Eq. (D4).
(a) Parameter b^ 0 is the constant term or intercept of the regression and gives the
estimated value of Y i, when X 1 i= X 2 i=0.
(b) Parameter b^ 1, measures the change in Y for each one-unit change in X 1 i , while
holding X 2 i constant. Slope parameter b, is a partial regression coefficient because
it corresponds to the partial derivative of Y with respect to X 1, or ∂ Y ∕ ∂ X 1.
(c) Parameter b^ 2 measures the change in Y for each one-unit change in X 2 while
holding X 1 constant. Slope parameter b^ 2 is the second partial regression coefficient
because it corresponds to the partial derivative of Y with respect to X 2 , or ∂ Y ∕ ∂ X 2.
3. Table (D1.3) gives the real per capita income in thousands of U.S. dollars Y with
the percentage of the labor force in agriculture X 1, and the average years of
schooling of the population over 25 years of age X 2 for 15 developed countries in
1981.
(a) Find the least-squares regression equation of Y on X and X2.
(b) Interpret the results of part (a).

6. Test at the 5% level of significance for (a) b 1 and (b) b 2 in Prob. 3(a).
7. Find R^2 for the OLS regression equation estimated in Problem 3(a), using (a)
b^ 1 ∑ y x1 + b^ 2 ∑ y x 2
2 2
2 ∑ ^y i 2 ∑ ei
R= 2 , (b)
R =1− 2 and (c) R2= 2 .
∑ yi ∑ yi ∑ yi
8. Table D1.4 extends Table C3 and gives the per capita GDP (gross domestic
product) to the nearest $100 (Y ) and the percentage of the economy represented by
agriculture ( X 1), and the male literacy rate ( X 2 ) reported by the World Bank World
Development Indicators for 1999 for 15 Latin American countries.
(a) Find the least-squares regression equation of Y on X, and X2.
(b) Interpret the results of part a and compare them with those of Prob. Related to
Table C3.
