Explanation Task 17 Maret 2023

The document contains 3 explanation texts written by a student. Text 1 explains flooding, how it occurs naturally through rain absorption and flows to lower areas, and how it can be disastrous for humans. Text 2 describes how rain forms through the water cycle of evaporation and condensation in clouds, then falls as raindrops. Text 3 outlines the process of breathing, involving the nose, trachea, lungs and associated muscles and their roles in inhaling air and exhaling carbon dioxide. The student is then asked questions about the texts to test their understanding, including identifying the purpose of the first paragraph in each, finding examples of passive voice, verb tenses, conjunctions of cause and effect

Flooding

Flooding is a disaster which commonly happens in large and densely populated cities. In
Indonesia, the floods hit Jakarta very often and cause many victims.

The process of natural flooding is preceded by rain which falls to the surface of the earth. Then
the rain water is absorbed by the ground surface and flows to the lower place. Once that
condition happens, evaporation and the water appear to the surface of the land. Flooding can
be disastrous for humans when floods happen in an area that people live because the water
carries along objects like houses, bridges, cars, furniture and even people.

On the other hand, the process of non natural flooding is usually caused by bad habits of
humans who do not care about the environment, such as littering that can make water flow
clogged. This makes the water deposited in landfills which gradually becomes more common.
When water reservoirs can no longer hold water discharge, the water then overflows out
theland and cause flooding.

How Does Rain From and What Is The Water Cycle?

Let's look at the size of rain and how raindrops fall first, rain falls from the cloud . We’ll need
the Sun when the Sun shines on water on the Earth's surface, the heat of the Sun warms the
water turning it into an invisible gas called water vapour.

This process the changing of water into a gas is called evaporation because gases are lighter
than liquids. Water vapor rises up into the sky and the further you move up and away from the
Earth's surface the colder temperature gets, so in the sky the water vapor cools and changes
back into tiny water droplets. This change is called condensation, and it is the opposite of
evaporation.

Clouds are made up of tiny water droplets so when condensation occurs in the sky clouds
form and grow. When water droplets bump into one another they stick together and grow in
size they continue to grow until they are too heavy and fall as rain. They even grows they bump
into one another on their journey fromthe cloud to the ground and every single raindrop that
reaches the ground is made up of 1 million of the original tiny water droplets.

Raindrops fall on the ground surface or the Sun can shine on them and the whole process ‘
happens again. This is called the water cycle and keeps water moving from the ground to the
sky providing the water needed for plants animals and people to survive.

HOW DO WE breathe?

The nose, trachea and lungs are the main organs which make up the respiratory system. This
system allows the exchange of gases which are needed for us to live.

Breathing happens when the brain sends a message through the nerves to the intercostal
muscles which lie between the ribs and diaphragm. When the instruction is received, the
muscles pull the ribs outwards and the diaphragm relaxes so that the space in the chest gets
bigger. Because the pressure in the chest gets lower, air rushes in to fill the lungs.

This air is first taken in through the nose or mouth. It then travels into the throat (the pharynx)
and on through the voice box (the larynx). The opening to the voice box has a cover over it
called the epiglottis.

This cover opens when a breath is taken. In this way, the air is able to flow down_the trachea
but food is kept out.

After passing down the trachea the air travels into the lung down either the right or left
bronchus, through the bronchioles and at last into tiny air sacs called alveoli. These are
covered with small blood vessels called capillaries. From here, oxygen is finally taken into the
blood stream and carbon dioxide is passed back to the lungs.

The intercostal muscles then push the rib cage back inwards. As a result, the space in the chest
gets smaller and the pressure rises, thus pushing the carbon dioxide back out of the lungs.

And it all happens in the space of a single breath!

B. Based on your own explanation text, answer the following question:

1. What is the function of the first paragraph of each text above?
Text 1 : to explain how the flood happen
Text 2 : to explain how rain originates and what is the water cycle
Text 3 :to explain how to breathe

2. Write one passive voice from text 1.

The process of natural flooding is preceded by rain which falls to the surface of the earth

3. Find the simple present tense (verbal sentences) in the first paragraph of text 2.
a. The Sun shines on water on the Earth's surface.
b. The heat of the Sun warms the water turning it into an invisible gas called water
vapour.
c. rain falls from the cloud.

4. Write down two examples of passive voice in the second paragraph of the text 2.
a. This process the changing of water into a gas is called evaporation.
b. This change is called condensation.
5. Find the conjunction of cause and effect in the text 3.
a. diaphragm relaxes so that the space in the chest gets bigger.
b. Because the pressure in the chest gets lower, air rushes in to fill the lungs.
c. As a result, the space in the chest gets smaller and the pressure rises.
d. thus pushing the carbon dioxide back out of the lungs.
