EXPLAIN

It is an undeniable fact that parents are the ones who brought the children in life, it is simply their
married. They are the ones who reproduce the human kind in a given society, as in this way they
contribute to the development of the human history. Parents or family as a whole, are one of the direct
holder of educational work. (Emerllahu, Dali, 1998) The term parent should be comprehended as a set of
notions such as:
1. Their planning and decision to children birth and the overall nativity rate
2. Their care and contribution towards rising their children’
3. The parents’ actions and activities towards an overall parental achievement of a priori set goals The
family as a cell acts only with love and respect and it dominates the understanding, affection, sacrifice
and childcare.
The parents take a crucial stand, when it comes to their children’s development and education as
whole, as the parents themselves are the ones to take care on the overall children physical and
intellectual development, till the point they get independent and ready to face the challenges of
the society they live in. Parents are aware of the work on the development of children, but at the
same time they need pedagogical information on the right to education of their children.

ROLE OF PARENTS

1. As INDIVIDUAL
 Children have two main educators in their lives – their parents and their teachers. Parents are the
prime educators until the child attends nursery or starts school and remain a major influence on
their children’s learning through school and beyond. But, mother is always closer to children.
Parents are their children’s strongest role model and greatest influence. Children always adopt
parent’s values and types of behavior. Here’s all that you need to know about the role of parents
in the development of their child.
2. As HOME-EDUCATORS
 Parents should provide basic care and guidance towards the good behaviour and general
development of their children. They should keep school staff informed of their children's
progress and significant events that may affect their children's learning. Parents are involved in
supporting their children in doing their homework, as in this way they offer their parental
support as one of the key strategies leading towards a successful education of their children at
school.
3. As PARTNERS OF THE SCHOOL

 Pay an active role in the education of their children;

 Understand the needs of their children and play an active role in helping schools to interpret
responses from the public;
 Show an active interest in their children's schooling;
 Participate in activities and consultation related to the education of their children;
 Cooperate with the school and other parents in the interests of their children's education;
 Be supportive of agreed school policies;

2|P a g e
 Be aware of their rights and responsibilities in relation to the education of their children and how
those rights and responsibilities are reflected in the policies and practices of the school; and
 Provide opinions and suggestions for school improvement.

4. As CLIENTS OF THE SCHOOL, parents should be provided with comprehensive information

related to:
 the education provided to their children;
 the operation of the school;
 the child's performance at school and how this is assessed;
 the performance of the school and how this is assessed; and
 other matters related to the educational development of their children

5. As DECISION-MAKERS OF THE SCHOOL parents should:

 Vote in or stand for the election of parent managers on the PTA; and
 Put forward views about what the school is doing and make suggestions on how it should be run.

Importance of the Role of Parents in Child Development

 Parenting and child development go hand in hand. The proverbs that the apple does not fall far
from the tree can well-describe the effects of parenting styles. All development is interrelated and
cannot be defined under water-tight categories. So let us focus on how parents can actively
participate to ensure that the child’s growing years are worthy. The role of parents in child
development is responsive, responsible and never-ending. It governs responses, actions, thinking
and decision making of a child in the following areas.

1. Cognitive Development
 When children are growing up, positive parenting improves their cognitive, social and problem-
solving skills. Positive parenting also affects their responses and helps them grow up to be better
humans. Interaction and stimulation are very important in the early years. It is all about
recognising problems, handling all situations well and picking up the traits of discipline, time
management and effective problem-solving through simple routines at home.
2. Socio-Cultural Development
 Children observe spousal interaction and how arguments are settled in the family. It teaches them
a variety of good values that are imbibed and crucial to growing up. The child learns how to
behave with others, playing to a common goal, team spirit, picking the right friends and a lot
more.
3. Physical Development
 Reaching age-related milestones is not the only goal. Children learn about being healthy,
exercising regularly, being a team player, having the right diet and growing in a conducive
environment through play-and-learn. The right guidance from parents can inculcate in children a
good regimen of exercise and diet to achieve ideal physical development. Parents should
remember that children lead by example.
4. Mental Development
 Parenting styles help the child learn innovatively, accepting failures and overcoming them,
understanding discipline, accepting feedback and the award-and-punishment concept. It governs
their response to stimuli, thus moulding their minds.
5. Spiritual Development
 Understanding religion, prayer, knowing right from wrong, being empathetic, having the right
ethical values, valuing your parents and strengthening goal-setting liberates the free spirit in
children. Teaching your children to be more accepting and believing in the greater good can help

them gain a sense of purpose. Try not to conform them to any particular religion and let them
explore spirituality on their own.
A kid’s education starts from home. Parents are their first teachers and they have a key role in shaping up
their character. A balance of education at home and school moulds a student’s actual learning. Be a
helping hand in their educational journey and travel with them with true inspiration. Parental
encouragement had played a crucial role in successful students. Their role is not limited to home but
involvement in school activities too.
