2nd Year 1st Semester Electrical and Computer Engineering Probability and Statistics Assignment
When you begin answering a question start from on new page or not write at the back of paper

1) Explain how the following experiments are equivalent to random urn experiments:
a) Flip a fair coin twice.
b) Toss a pair of fair dice.
c) Draw two cards from a deck of 52 distinct cards, with replacement after
the first draw; without replacement after the first draw.
2) Consider the binary communication channel shown in Fig. below. The channel input
symbol X may assume the state 0 or the state 1, and, similarly, the channel output symbol
Y may assume either the state 0 or the state 1. Because of the channel noise, an input 0
may convert to an output 1 and vice versa. The channel is characterized by the channel
transition probabilities p0, q0, p1 and q1 defined by

Where x0 and x1, denote the events (X = 0) and (X = 1), respectively and y0 and y1, denote the
events (Y = 0) and (Y = I), respectively.
Note that p0 + q0 = 1 = p1 + q1. Let P(x0) = 0.5, p0 = 0.1 and p1 = 0.2.
a) Find P(yo) and P(yl).
b) If a 0 was observed at the output, what is the probability that a 0 was the input state?
c) If a 1 was observed at the output, what is the probability that a 1 was the input state?
Calculate the probability of error Pe.

3) A multiple-choice test contains 20 questions with answer choice A, B, C and D. Only one
answer choice to each question represents a correct answer. Find the probability that a
student will answer exactly 6 questions correct if he makes random guesses on all 20
questions.
4) In a box there are 100 resistors having resistance and tolerance as shown in the following
table. Let a resistor be selected from the box and assume each resistor has the same
likelihood of being chosen. Define three events A as draw a 47𝛺 resistor, B as draw a
resistor with 5% tolerance and C as draw a 100Ω resistor.
Find 𝑃 (𝐴⁄B), 𝑃 (𝐴⁄C) and 𝑃 (𝐵⁄C).

5) Let X be a continuous r.v. X with pdf

Where k is a constant
a. Determine the value of k and sketch fX(x).
b. Find and sketch the corresponding cdf Fx(x).
1
c. Find P(4 < 𝑋 ≤ 2).

6) A continuous random variable X has probability density given by

Find (a) E(X)

(b) E(X2).
