Artistic Director
Welcome to the 15th edition of the Bengaluru International Film Festival. As we
embark on this remarkable milestone, it’s a moment of great pride and celebration
for all of us involved in the world of cinema.
At its core, a film festival serves as a platform for film art appreciation, where we
come together to explore, celebrate, and critique the diverse array of cinematic
expressions from around the globe. It’s a testament to the importance of cultural
exchange and academic discourse, as we engage with stories that challenge,
inspire, and resonate on a deeply human level.
We are presenting the best of world cinema right here in Bengaluru, providing a
holistic film experience - cinematic and thematic. It is noteworthy to mention that
only 43 festivals worldwide have received accreditation from FIAPF, and BIFFes
proudly stands among them. This accreditation is not just a validation of our
efforts but also a point of pride for Karnataka’s glorious heritage and the State’s
achievements in the fields of literature, fine arts, and cinema.
As we reflect on the journey of the festival over the past 15 years, the benevolence of
the government has played a pivotal role in the success of BIFFes, ensuring that the
festival continues to thrive and evolve over the years. We are also grateful for the
unwavering support and dedication of our participants, filmmakers, collaborators
and various National and International Cultural organizations. Your commitment
has been instrumental in shaping BIFFes into an institution that it is today.
As we dive into the festivities ahead, let us embrace the transformative power of
cinema to inspire, educate, and unite us all. Here’s to another year of unforgettable
films, thought-provoking discussions, and cherished memories at BIFFes.
Thank you, and enjoy the festival!

DIRECTOR - CHRISTIAN PETZOLD GERMANY / 2023 / GERMAN / 103 MIN.
A small holiday house by the Baltic Sea. The days are hot and it hasn’t rained in weeks.
Four young people come together, friends old and new. As the parched forests around
them begin to ignite, so do their emotions. Happiness, lust, and love; but also jealousies,
resentments, and tensions. Meanwhile, the forests burn. And before long, the flames are
there.

India, with its vast and diverse cultural landscape, is a treasure
trove of cinematic richness waiting to be discovered. While
mainstream cinema may dominate the global stage, there exists
a vibrant tapestry of films from regions that offer a profound
insight into the country's multifaceted identity.
These films, often in lesser-known languages and dialects,
offer a window into the lives of communities seldom seen on
the silver screen. From the struggles of indigenous tribes to
the triumphs of ordinary individuals, each frame captures the
essence of a region's unique heritage and ethos.
In this category, we are greeted by the cadence of languages
such as Kodava, Tulu, Banjara, Santhali, Rabha, Markodi, and
Taiphake. These linguistic gems, often overshadowed by more
prevalent tongues, offer a glimpse into the rich tapestry of India's
cultural heritage, each carrying its own stories, traditions, and
nuances.
As we delve into the world of “Unsung Incredible India” cinema,
we are reminded of the power of storytelling to bridge divides
and foster understanding across cultures. They remind us that
true cinematic excellence knows no boundaries, transcending
language, geography, and convention to touch the hearts and
minds of audiences around the world. In celebrating these unsung
gems, we honor the voices and visions of filmmakers who dare
to explore the road less traveled, shedding light on the untold
stories and hidden treasures that lie beneath the surface.

I
ranian film director, screenwriter, poet, photographer and
film producer, Abbas Kiarostami is known for single-handedly
putting Iran on the map of International cinema. His career,
spanning 5 decades, encompassed many artistic expressions
including filmmaking. Kiarostami's films frequently explore
themes of identity, memory, love, and the passage of time, all set
against the backdrop of Iranian society and culture.
Abbas Kiarostami began his cinematic career at the Institute
for Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults (a.k.a.
Kanoon) in Tehran, where he honed his distinctive style and
initiated a three-decade-long string of films made about or for
children. With one of his film HOMEWORK (1989), he explores
the habits of schoolchildren that ends up revealing much more
besides.
Kiarostami broadened his engagement with children and their
experiences, exploring their interactions with adults with the
KOKER TRILOGY. The first of these, WHERE IS THE FRIEND’S
HOUSE? (1987), is the film that vaulted Kiarostami to the forefront
of the world stage. The lyrical fables of AND LIFE GOES AND ON,
THROUGH THE OLIVE TREES balances comedy and tragedy and
exemplifies both the gentle humanism and the playful sleight of
hand that defined the director’s sensibility.
Kiarostami’s films walk a thin line between fiction and reality.
This is most evident in his moving and richly layered masterpiece
CLOSE UP. An intricately reflexive drama that blends the
intellectual impulse of documentary observation and the
emotional need for self-dramatization. Kiarostami explored the
relationships between individuals with a keen eye for the beauty
of landscapes and produced philosophical works like the Palme
d’Or winning TASTE OF CHERRY and THE WIND WILL CARRY US.
Kiarostami's influence extends far beyond the realm of cinema.
His commitment to crafting insightful humanistic narratives will
remain forever in our memories and his ability to find beauty
in the mundane continues to resonate with audiences of every
generation globally, cementing his legacy as one of the most
significant filmmakers of his generation.

DIRECTOR - ABBAS KIAROSTAMI IRAN / 1992 / PERSIAN / 95 MIN.
In the aftermath of the 1990 earthquake in Iran that left fifty thousand dead, Abbas
Kiarostami returned to Koker, where his camera surveys not only the devastation but
also the teeming life in its wake. Blending fiction and reality into a playful, poignant road
movie, ‘And Life Goes On’ follows a film director who, along with his son, makes the trek
to the region in hopes of finding out if the young boys who acted in ‘Where Is the Friend’s
House?’ are among the survivors, and discovers a resilient community pressing on in the
face of tragedy.

DIRECTOR - ABBAS KIAROSTAMI IRAN / 1990 / PERSIAN / 98 MIN.
This fiction-documentary hybrid uses a sensational real-life event – the arrest of a
young man on charges that he fraudulently impersonated the well-known filmmaker
Mohsen Makhmalbaf – as the basis for a stunning, multilayered investigation into
movies, identity, artistic creation, and existence, in which the real people from the case
play themselves. With its universal themes and fascinating narrative knots, Close-up –
one of Kiarostami’s most radical, brilliant works – has resonated with viewers around
the world.

In Abbas Kiarostami’s second documentary feature about education, the filmmaker
himself asks the questions, probing a succession of invariably cute first- and second-
graders about their home situations and the schoolwork they must do there. It emerges
that many parents are illiterate. Tellingly, many kids can define punishment (the corporal
variety seems common) but not encouragement.

mÉøïÖ D¥sï ZÀjæ TA’M E GUILASS
DIRECTOR - ABBAS KIAROSTAMI IRAN / 1997 / PERSIAN / 99 MIN.
This austere, emotionally complex drama by the great Abbas Kiarostami follows the
enigmatic Mr. Badii as he drives around the hilly outskirts of Tehran looking for someone
who will agree to bury him after he commits suicide, a taboo under Islam. Extended
conversations with three passengers (a soldier, a seminarian, and a taxidermist) elicit
different views on mortality and individual choice. Operating at once as a closely
observed, realistic story and a fable populated by archetypal figures, Taste of Cherry
challenges the viewer to consider what often goes unexamined in everyday life.

A TV crew from Tehran arrives in a remote Kurdish village to film an unusual funeral
ceremony, but they are stymied when the old woman they expect to die clings to life. A
fable-like story about professional and personal frustration, this droll drama is the most
tantalizingly opaque and allusive of Kiarostami’s films, containing numerous references
to poetry and several key figures (including the old woman) who are never seen.

THROUGH THE OLIVE TREES
vÀÆæ ¢ D°Ãªï næøï ZIRE DARAKHATAN ZEYTON
DIRECTOR - ABBAS KIAROSTAMI IRAN / 1994 / PERSIAN / 103 MIN.
Unfolding behind the scenes of “And Life Goes On,” this film traces the complications
that arise when the romantic misfortune of one of the actors—a young man who pines
for the woman cast as his wife, even though, in real life, she will have nothing to do with
him—creates turmoil on set and leaves the hapless director caught in the middle.
Through the Olive Trees, an ineffably lovely, gentle human comedy steeped in the
folkways of Iranian village life, peels away layer after layer of artifice as it investigates
the elusive, alchemical relationship between cinema and reality.

young hero zigzags determinedly across two towns, aided (and sometimes misdirected)
by those he encounters, his quest becomes both a revealing portrait of rural Iranian
society in all its richness and complexity and a touching parable about the meaning of
personal responsibility. Sensitive and profound, Where Is the Friend’s House? is shot

fulfilling the guru’s unfulfilled dreams. Vishwa falls in love with two women - Sharada,
the guru’s daughter, and Girija, a famous dancer whose father takes advantage of
Vishwa’s talent. With Sharada’s help, Vishwa sets out to build a music college. Girija
donates all her money to the college, but Vishwa loses his voice. Sharada teaches him
how to regain his voice, but their relationship is complicated because Vishwa is
essentially an extension of Sharada’s father, which creates incestuous overtones. To
overcome this, the film suggests that Sharada might be a goddess and has Vishwa

O ur film festival serves as a platform for academic
discourse, aiming to invigorate budding filmmakers
and the broader film practitioner community.
Through seminars, workshops, masterclasses, and
interactive sessions, we delve into what goes behind
cinematic expression, from lectures on filmmaking
to a masterclass on editing, from understanding
constitutional values to interactions on gender
sensitivity. We seek to nurture a culture of critical
inquiry and artistic exploration, inviting participants
to engage in constructive dialogue with industry
professionals and experts.
