LEARNING MODULE IN MATHEMATICS 4

Third Quarter AY 2021 – 2022

DATE: February 21 – April 1, 2022 TIME ALLOTMENT: 5 days/week
(28 days)
UNIT 3: Fractions and Decimals
INTRODUCTION
This module encompasses the key concepts of fractions, and decimals.

You are expected to do the Math investigation activity in the first part of every lesson to give you opportunities to
explore prerequisite skills and techniques in solving simple problems which will lead you to the process of
learning as you practice the skill by answering simple exercises to reinforce your skill in dealing with fractions
and decimals.

Consequently, as your learning continues, you go deeper about the concepts by applying what you have learned
in solving simple problems that you may encounter in your daily activities.

Lastly as you culminate your learning about number theory, fractions, and decimals, you are expected to make a
business proposal in starting a small bakery by comparing prices and providing financial computations applying
the key concepts of number theory, fractions, and decimals to convince business partners to invest in your bakery.

FRACTIONS AND DECIMAL NUMBERS

Let’s visualize decimal numbers.

In algebra, a decimal number can be defined as a number whose whole number part and the fractional part is
separated by a decimal point. The dot in a decimal number is called a decimal point. The digits following the
decimal point show a value smaller than one.

USC BED NC Modular Learning

AY 2021 – 2022 Second Quarter p a g e 15 | 37
Changing Fractions to Decimals
Decimals are based on the preceding powers of 10. Thus, as we move from left to right, the place value of
digits gets divided by 10, meaning the decimal place value determines the tenths, hundredths and
thousandths. A tenth means one tenth or 1/10. In decimal form, it is 0.1. Hundredth means 1/100. In
decimal form, it is 0.01.

Here’s an example of how the fractional part can be converted into decimals.

USC BED NC Modular Learning

AY 2021 – 2022 Second Quarter p a g e 16 | 37
Tenths, hundredths, and thousandths can be represented on a number line. To represent
tenths, the distance between each whole number on a number line is partitioned into 10
equal parts where each part represents a tenth.

DECIMAL PLACE VALUE

A decimal number consists of a whole number and a fractional part, separated by a decimal point.

Place value of a digit

Depending upon the position of a digit in a number, it has a value called its place value. For example, the place value
of the digit 6 in the number 1673 is 600 as 6 is in the hundreds place. However, if we interchange the digits 6 and 7
in the number 1673, we get a new number 1763. In 1763 the place value of the digit 6 is 60 as it is in the tens place.

USC BED NC Modular Learning

AY 2021 – 2022 Second Quarter p a g e 17 | 37
We can use a decimal place value chart to find the place values of the digits in a decimal number.

A decimal place value chart helps to find the place value of the digits in a decimal number.

Example: Write the place value of the digits 2 and 4 in the number 326.471
First, write the number in a decimal place value chart.

Then, look at the place of the digit and find its place value.

The digit 2 is in the tens place. Therefore, its place value is 2 tens or 20.

The digit 4 is in the tenths place. Therefore, its place value is 4 tenths or 0.4

Example: Find the place value of the underlined digits in the number 4532.079

In the number 4532.079:

4 is at the thousands place. So, its place value is 4 thousands or 4000

0 is at the tenths place. So, its place value is 0 tenths or 0

9 is at the thousandths place. So, its place value is 9 thousandths or 0.009

Fun Facts

• The actual value of a digit is called its face value. Unlike the place value of a digit, which depends
upon its position in a number, the face value remains the same, irrespective of its position.
