Experiment On Shear Strength

This document provides information about assembly drawings and their purpose and components. It discusses: - Assembly drawings show how machine parts fit together as a complete unit, indicating dimensions and relationships between parts. - They are used to represent proper working relationships between mating parts and each part's function. Overall dimensions and part numbers are also provided. - Working assembly drawings include all necessary dimensions for manufacture without additional detail drawings. Sub-assembly drawings show smaller mechanical units that combine to form the full machine. - Exploded assembly drawings separate parts for clearer understanding of positions, while maintaining alignment. Item lists provide part descriptions and quantities. - The document includes exercises to create orthographic and isometric assembly drawings,

PROJECT 05- ASSEMBLY DRAWINGS

INTRODUCTION
There are various tools and machines used by human beings in their daily activities. All these
machines and their mechanisms consist of numerous component parts though they exist as a
whole. A drawing showing the machine in its completed state after all the component parts are
brought together and “assembled “ is called an assembly drawing.
The primary functions of the assembly drawing are to show the product in its completed shape,
to indicate the relationship of its various component parts, and to designate these components
by part or a detail number. The part numbers are used to prepare an item list showing quantity,
material and description of each part. Other information necessary for assembly which should
be given include: Overall dimensions, relationship dimensions between parts operating
instructions etc.
Assembly drawings are the drawings in which the various parts of a machine or structure are
drawn in their relative position in the complete unit.

Assembly drawing is used for:

1) To show the parts fit together.
2) To represent the proper working relationship of the mating parts of a machine or
structure and the function of each.
3) To give a general idea of how the finished product should look like.
4) To aid in securing overall dimensions and center distances in the assembly.
5) To give the detailer data needed to design the smaller units of a larger assembly.
6) To supply illustrations which may be used for catalogs, or other illustrative purposes

Assembly drawings need not be overly detailed because precise information describing part
shapes is provided on detail drawings. Therefore only center distances, overall dimensions,
and dimensions showing the relationship of the parts as they apply to the machine as a
whole are necessary.

Working assembly drawings

When a simple assembly drawing is dimensioned such that no other detail drawing is needed
for manufacture, then the assembly drawings becomes a working assembly drawing.

Sub-assembly drawing
These are for smaller mechanical units which when assembled makes a whole machine in a final
assembly.
Identifying parts of an assembly drawing
Item numbers corresponding with pat numbers of various details are placed on the assembly
drawings, attached to corresponding part with a header. The part No. is enclosed in a circle
called balloon. The balloon help distinguish part No’s from dimensions.

Exploded assembly drawing

In these types of drawings, the various constituent parts of the machine are aligned in position
and represented either in pictorial or orthographic exploded assembly. The parts in an exploded

assembly are completely detached from each other though aligned. Shading techniques may be
employed to make the drawings look more articulate and realistic.
These are easily understood drawings prepared to assist in the correct understanding of the
various component positions in an assembly.

Examples of exploded assembly drawing .

a) Exploded orthographic assembly
b) Exploded pictorial assembly
c) Orthographic assembly drawings

Bills of materials (items list)

This is the itemized list of all the components shown on an assembly.
 Standard components may be purchased on the market.
 Non standard parts must be made (manufactured) specially for the particular assembly.

Exercise 01
On the exploded views below carry out the following:
a) Prepare an assembly drawing of the machine parts shown in orthographic projection.
Use a broken out or partial section view in the front elevation to show the interior
features. Include 5 key dimensions, identification part numbers and an item list.

b) Draw an isometric drawing of the assembled machine parts in (a) above using a suitable
scale.

Exercise 02
Carry out a thorough study of the tool instrument provided in terms of size, shape, dimensions,
and the component parts and then do the following.
1) Represent the various component parts of the tool in Exploded pictorial assembly
2) Prepare a detail assembly drawing of the longitudinal section of the tool.
3) Prepare an item list of the constituent parts of the tool.
