Week 5 Reflection

The intern attended several events and meetings during the week including a staff meeting, meeting with their program manager, researching summer opportunities, and attending a letter writing event at the statehouse. The staff meeting and letter writing event stood out the most, with the staff meeting providing insight into the organization's direction and goals, and the letter writing event allowing the intern to interact with community members and see the impact of their work. Going forward, the intern plans to have a conversation about attending more events, focus their civic engagement research on opportunities that foster relationships, and improve communication with a fellow intern to better coordinate their work.

II. SO WHAT?
The two events that stand out most to me this week are the staff meeting and the Letters for
Legislators Event. The staff meeting was a very informative experience because it allowed me to
begin to understand the inner workings of the organization and get more clarity on different
staff members' perspectives about the direction the organization should go in. W4C is currently
in a transition period as several prominent staff members have left and the organization is
currently searching for a CEO. As such, W4C lacks stability and clear, cohesive goals. This
meeting helped to get everyone on the same page about the vision, personality, and direction
of the organization. Hopefully, this clarity fosters more teamwork and consistency throughout
our workplace.
The Letters for Legislators event was very successful and enjoyable. It was held at the
statehouse. Here we set up tables for people to come and write letters to their legislators in
support of or opposition to current bills. This event was the highlight of my week because I got
to get out of the office and spend time at the statehouse which is the hub for political affairs in
Indianapolis. It is so interesting to see the everyday workings of the statehouse and I have a
newfound appreciation for the work of legislators. I also enjoyed getting to spend time with
and hearing the stories of the individuals who came to our event. It was informative to talk
about a wide variety of topics with people from various backgrounds and of various ages. This
made me remember how much I enjoy connecting with people in a physical setting. As I start to
consider future careers, I know I want to have these kinds of interactions more frequently than
once a month or even once a week. Another small success of this event is that the letter
template I created was used by those who showed up to write letters. This made my work feel
seen. One individual complimented the template saying it was very useful which reinforced to
me that my work is helpful.

III. NOW WHAT?

Knowing that I want to be able to physically interact with people more I am going to have a
conversation with Kennedy to see if there is a way for me to attend more events or committee
meetings. This will increase my opportunity to connect with others and create relationships.
Given that I am currently brainstorming ways to meet our civic engagement outreach goals, I
am going to specifically focus on ways to meet this goal and simultaneously foster interaction
between individuals, staff members, and the community. The first thing I can do is narrow
down a target audience for such an event or program. When doing so, I need to ensure that I
am prioritizing building relationships not only for myself but for the W4C organization as a
whole.
Moving forward I will work together more closely with Marissa. Marissa is another intern who
has just been put in charge of the Youth Engage! committee. Together we will be working to
achieve outreach targets. This coming week I want to improve the communication line we have.
While this line is already established I think our communication could be more frequent. This

week I aim to reach out 3 times to Marissa with clarifying questions or to see if there is anything
she needs/wants me to do.
