Learning Outcomes

At the end of the chapter, the students must:

1. Define 21st Century Education

Answer: A 21st-century education is one that responds to the rapid economic, technological, and
cultural changes that are occurring today. It's an education that prepares kids for a world where
more than half of the jobs they'll have in their lifetime don't even exist yet.

2. Describe the 21st Century teacher and the needed innovative tools for learning

Answer: Using today's tools and innovations to do what you've always done is what teaching in
the twenty-first century entails. It means taking advantage of everything important in today's
world in order for students to thrive and flourish in today's economy, as well as the chance to
guide and train students for the future. Google Classroom, Editing Services, Class Marker,
Edmodo, and Kahoot are examples of tools that can help both teachers and students by making
learning materials and grading easier to access.

3. Examine the critical attributes of 21st Century Education

Answer: The first critical attribute of 21st century education is integrated and interdisciplinary
learning. This critical attribute means that teachers must study the school curriculum and find
methods or ways to efficiently connect different subjects to improve students' learning
experiences. Technologies and Multimedia are the second critical attribute of 21st-century
education. This critical attribute means that the school would need to buy and use computers and
other multimedia devices to improve learning as much as possible. As part of a larger
"technology strategy," teacher-users would also need training. The third critical attribute is
Global Classrooms, which means that teachers must include current global issues/concerns in
classroom discussions, such as harmony and respect for cultural differences, climate change, and
global warming. The fourth is Creating/Adapting to Constant Personal and Social Change, and
Lifelong Learning. This means that teachers can make it easier for students to acquire KSAVs
outside of the classroom. Learning can take place not only for the purpose of passing tests, but
also for the purpose of applying what has been learned in the classroom to real-world
circumstances. The fifth attribute is student-centered, which means that teachers should serve as
facilitators of learning rather than "sages on the stage." The sixth crictical attribute is 21st
Century Skills, which promotes the skills required to be active members of today's society.
Project-Based and Research-Driven is the seventh critical attribute, which means that teachers in
the twenty-first century must be informed about research in order to guide their students' learning
by self-directed activities such as learning projects both within and outside the classroom. Last
attribute is Relevant, Rigorous, and Real-world, which means that subjects are taught using
current and relevant knowledge and are related to real-life circumstances and meaning.

4. Explain how 21st Century Education concept can be integrated in the classroom

Answer: The skills that can be widely applied to improve ways of thinking, studying, working,
and living in the world can be incorporated into 21st century education in the classroom.
Rational thinking/reasoning, creativity/creative thinking, problem solving, metacognition,
teamwork, communication, and global citizenship are among the skills mentioned. Reading,
writing, numeracy, knowledge literacy, ICT [information and communications technologies]

digital literacy, and communication are all examples of 21st century education skills that can be
categorized as learning domains.

1. Compare and Contrast the traditional concept of literacyto the modern view of literacy.

Answer: Traditional literacy includes listening, speaking, reading, writing, and critical thinking.
It includes cultural awareness, which enables a speaker, writer, or reader to recognize and use
appropriate language in a variety of social situations. A modern view of literacy has become an
important aspect of overall literacy education as modern forms of communication, collaboration,
and research shift increasingly to digital formats. Literacy in modern contexts refers to the ability
to read and write at a level sufficient for communication, or at a level that allows one to
successfully comprehend and communicate in a print society, and thus literacy plays a role in
granting access to power. According to current definitions of literacy, reading, writing, and
digital communication are all language-based processes that are integrated in acts of making and

sharing meaning. Literacy is now defined as the ability to read, write, and communicate
effectively, rather than a collection of discrete skills like grammar or spelling. Regardless of the
differences, the student will be able to communicate freely through writing, reading, and digital
formats.

2. Describe the changes in the 21st century that have led to the rise of new literacies.

Answer: The increasing availability of communication technologies that were previously


unavailable to the average person gave rise to these so-called new literacies. Increased reach,
increased means of communication, and increased content breadth have all contributed to the rise
of new literacies. Globalization and multicultural literacy, social and financial literacy, media
and cyber/digital literacy, Eco literacy, artistic and creative literacy, and critical literacy are all
examples of these new literacies.

3. With a partner or triad, brainstorm and answer this question: What teaching strategies and
forms of assessment could you use to help develop functional literacy?

Answer: We should use a participatory approach to develop functional literacy, which means
that every student and teacher must actively participate in the activities. The teacher's role
changes with this approach; instead of giving us instructions and then stepping back to let the
students work, the teacher collaborates with the students. Because we want to prepare students
for real-life situations, we should use realistic materials. When teaching a large group of
students, it's best to have them work in pairs or small groups, and every activity should include
extra-textual elements like pictures, logos, or objects to reflect the activities' realistic nature.

4. Lesson Planning and Lesson Demonstration: Prepare and deliver a lesson that incorporates
some of the new literacies.

Synthesis

Direction: Based from what you’ve understand in Unit I, 21st Century Education, make an
synthesis, and make sure that you only use your own words or insigths about the topic.

Every student in the twenty-first century must be able to think critically, solve problems,
collaborate, engage, innovate, be globally aware, and technically literate. Some of the critical
attributes of 21st century education includes integrated and interdisciplinary learning,
technologies and multimedia, global classrooms, creating/adapting to constant personal and
social change, student-centered, 21st Century Skills, project-based and research-driven, and
finally Relevant, Rigorous, and Real-world. Also, we must absolutely reimagine education in the
twenty-first century. Instead of memorizing facts and figures, students must "learn how to learn"
and solve problems.

Professionals must be brought into the classroom to teach in the twenty-first century.
They must begin by working on projects for real organizations and then venture out into the
environment and into communities. Giving students the skills, they need to excel in this new
world, as well as helping them gain the courage to practice those skills, is at the heart of a 21st-
century education. With so much knowledge at their fingertips, 21st century skills concentrate on
making sense of it, sharing it, and putting it to good use.
