Lesson Proper
Alright, so let’s proceed to our lesson proper,
today we will be discussing the subject-verb
agreement.
Subject-verb agreement is a grammatical rule,
which states that the subject and the verb
must agree in a sentence.
Get your book and Open it to page 29. Read
the following sentences on Task 13.1 (whole class reading)

What about the encircled words??
Very good. In the first sentence, is the subject All the encircled words are verbs, ma’am.

How about the verb? Plural Ma’am.
That’s right!
Please keep in mind that Singular subjects take Also plural, ma’am.
singular verbs and plural subjects take plural
verbs, that’s the general rule of subject-verb
agreement.
Example: The baby drinks milk. (singular) The
babies drink milk. (plural)
Now, give me your example, Carlo. Carlo: The dog barks.
The dogs bark.

C. Discussion
Subject-verb agreement means ensuring that
the verb used agrees in number (singular or
plural) with its subject. For example, "The
student writes" since both nouns and verbs
agree in singular form. Proper usage helps
convey clear meaning and improves
communication effectiveness.
Additional rule. 1. If subjects are joined by
“and” they are considered plural.
Example: My mother and my aunt prefer
Filipino dishes.
Give me another example, Geraldine. Geraldine: The teacher and Analyn were busy
yesterday.

2. If subjects are joined by or nor, the verb
should agree with the closer subject.
Example: Either the baby or the puppies drink
milk.
Another example, Marcela! Marcela: Neither the students nor the teacher
is present.

As you can see, class the given example by
Marcela is singular because the closest subject
to the verb is singular which is the teacher.
3. The relative pronouns (who, whom, which,
and that) are either singular or plural,
depending on the words they refer to.
Example: The sales manager is a good
researcher who spends a great amount of time
surfing the Web for information.
Another example, Kath! Kath: Jesele is one of the students who
participate in the activity.

4. Indefinite pronouns (someone, somebody,
each, either one, everyone, or anyone) are
considered singular and need singular verbs
although they convey plural meaning.

5. A few subjects look plural but are
really singular or vice versa.
Example: The news of the discovery is
spreading.

E. Generalization
Subject-verb agreement is a grammatical
rule, which states that the subject and the verb
must agree in a sentence. Singular subjects
take singular verbs and plural subjects take
plural verb.
