Flame Test

The document describes a flame test experiment to observe the emission spectra of metals in compounds. Various metallic compounds were placed in a flame and their characteristic flame colors were recorded. The results showed that compounds of potassium, lithium, calcium, barium, copper, silver, lead, magnesium, and sodium each produced a distinctive colored flame. The purpose was to identify metal ions present in compounds by analyzing the colors they emit during heating.

Title: Flame test

Aim: To observe the emission spectra of metals in compounds

Materials/Apparatus:
● 10 M Hydrochloric acid
● Spatula
● Nickel-Chromium (nichrome) wire
● Lighter
● Bunsen Burner
● Petri dish
● Metallic compounds:
○ Potassium chloride
○ Lithium carbonate
○ Calcium chloride
○ Barium chloride
○ Barium sulfate
○ Copper sulfate
○ Silver Nitrate
○ Lead Nitrate
○ Magnesium chloride
○ Sodium sulfate
○ potassium dichromate
Method:
1. The chromium wire was dipped in 10M hydrochloric acid.
2. The metallic compound was placed on the wire and into the flame of the bunsen burner.
3. The colour of the flame produced was recorded.
4. This was repeated for all metallic compounds selected

Barium chloride Greenish yellow

Barium sulphate Orange

Copper sulphate Green

Silver Nitrate Orange (sparked)

Lead nitrate White

Magnesium chloride White

Sodium sulphate Yellow

Discussion:
What is a flame test?
A flame test is a chemical test that detects the presence of specific metal ions in a compound by
analysing the distinctive colour generated by the flame when heated.

State the colours that each metallic compound gives off during the test.
Sources of errors: (Use only one error)
1. Due to an accidental touching of the bunsen burner with one of the metallic compounds,
extra coloured flames were seen.
2. Some colors may be inaccurate due to the contamination of the hydrochloric acid by
other chemicals
3. Hydrochloric acid was accidentally spilled on the table.
Precautions: (use only one precaution)
1. Gloves were worn to prevent burning of hands against the flames.
2. Caution was taken to stand away from the flames to prevent the fire from flashing unto
the clothes.
3. Any highly flammable material was kept away from the experiment area.

Conclusion:
To conclude the colors given of by the metallic compounds were: (state the metallic compounds
along with their colours)
