APPLIED FOR SKILL-BASED INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Program objective:
To meet the need identified by the patients for the education of Health Care Assistants.
Program goal:
The Health Care Assistant skill-based internship Program is designed to support the students
with opportunities to develop the knowledge, abilities, and attitudes necessary to perform
effectively and efficiently as front-line care providers and be a valuable member of the health
care team in both hospital and clinic settings. With the close monitoring of a skillful healthcare
supervisor, students will have a change to learn how to provide person-centered care aimed at
promoting and maintaining the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social well-being of
patients and family members.
Upon completion of the program, students will receive a Health Care Assistant certificate.
The certificate requirement is the student must be completed satisfactorily in internship
program.
Program description
The Skill based internship program is the training session developed for enhancing the specific
skills of healthcare assistant professionals or provide for a platform for imparting skills to
candidates. To undertake the skill-based training program, it is mandatory that the candidate
must fulfil the theory sessions of HCA by the well-certified training centers.
The overarching, primary concept is CARING and is supported by the foundational concepts of
SAFETY, CRITICAL THINKING & DECISION MAKING, and PROFESSIONAL APPROACHES TO
PRACTICE. These provide the underpinnings for the knowledge and skills that learners gain
within the program.
It is recommended that the HCA training center must help the candidate in continuing the
studies in this internship program.

General learning outcomes:
Upon completion of the HCA Program, graduates will be able to:
1. Demonstrate professional behavior, personal qualities and characteristics of an HCA.
2. Demonstrate the ability to perform clinical skills essential in providing basic healthcare
services.
3. Demonstrate communication process of an HCA, which also reflects professional
appearance and a positive attitude.
4. Practice infection control measures.
5. Demonstrate safe and efficient interventions for patient safety.
6. Demonstrate techniques to maintain the personal hygiene needs of a patient.
7. Demonstrate actions in the event of medical and facility emergencies.
8. Apply the skills for the patients to cope with changes to their health and well-being.
Delivery: This program is delivered face to face.
Time for this program: 3 months
Scope of practice
As per the training module at the end of the training, the candidate would be certified to
perform following activities–
A. Assist basic nursing care and procedures.
B. Prevent and control infection.
C. Communicate with patient and their care givers.
D. Work and communicate effectively with others healthcare professionals.
E. Maintain a safe, healthy, and secure environment.
F. Follow waste disposal protocols.
Minimum Entry requirement
The candidate must have completed matriculation exam and theory training sessions of well
certified HCA training centers.
Students are required to:
• Have appropriate theory knowledge (after theory sessions completed at training sectors)
• Provide their own transportation to & from hospitals/clinic.
• Follow the hospitals/clinic rules and culture.
• Follow the assigned duties roster for internship program.

Typical Structure of Instructional Hours:
A. Practical hours – 480 hours
B. Lecture Hours – 60 hours
Teaching faculty and infrastructure:
1. Should be at the position with B.Sc. (Nursing) with two years of experience or healthcare
nursing experience for 2 years.
2. Should be able to perform and train the patient related skills.
Medium of instruction:
English/ Burmese language shall be the medium of instruction for all the subjects of study
and for examination of the course.
Attendance:
A candidate has to secure minimum 90% attendance in Skills training (practical) for qualifying
to appear for the final examination.
No relaxation, whatsoever, will be permissible to this rule under any ground including
indisposition etc.

TOPICS TO BE COVERED
I. Basic Healthcare Assisting Knowledge
1. Professionalism and Values
a) Understand professional ethics and legal responsibility.
b) Understand negligence, malpractice, abuse, sexual harassment, and neglect.
c) Understand confidentiality.
d) Identify clients’ rights in all health-care settings.

2. Communication and Interpersonal skills and working with others


a. Utilize effective communication skills.
b. Understand the importance of responding to a client’s request for assistance in a
timely manner.
c. Assist client with reality orientation support.
d. Recognize, report, and record pertinent client observations.

3. Recognize and use medical terminology.


a. Demonstrate the use of medical references to spell medical terms correctly.
b. Identify common abbreviations and their meanings.
c. Define prefixes, suffixes, and word roots of selected medical terms.
d. Translate medical terms and abbreviations into common language.

4. Perform infection control measures.


a. Utilize principles of medical asepsis and infection control.
b. Adhere to standard precautions related to the transmission of infectious diseases.
c. Demonstrate proper hand-hygiene technique.
d. Demonstrate donning and removing disposable gloves and gown.
e. Perform procedures to clean equipment and washable supplies.
f. Dispose of contaminated material according to approved policy.
g. Assist with education of the client and family in medical aseptic techniques.

II. Basic Nursing Care Knowledge


1. Maintain the unit
a. Demonstrate bed-making skills to include unoccupied, occupied, and surgical.
b. Maintain a clean and aesthetic environment.

2. Assist with lifting, moving, and transporting clients.
a. Utilize principles of proper body mechanics.
b. Transfer the client to and from a bed and chair.
c. Position the client in a bed and chair.
d. Turn and reposition the client in bed.
e. Assist the client in ambulation.
f. Assist with transfer of the client using special devices.
g. Transport the client by stretcher, wheelchair, and bed.
h. Assist with education of the client in proper use of assistive devices.
III. Ward Specific Procedures
1. OPD
a. Perform Basic Life Support
b. Dusting, cleaning, and disinfection daily of OPD and environment
c. Waste management
d. Complete proper documentation of OPD register, IPD admission register and file
completions.
e. Assists in Nursing care (wound dressing, cannular insertion, drip infusions, catheter
insertion and Ryle tube insertion, medical diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures)
f. To understand and perform the invasive interventions (ECG, RBS, Vital Signs,
Nebulizer, oxygen inhalation, stitching)
g. To understand and perform the dressing box and instruments.
h. To understand and perform the OPD workflow and IPD admission from OPD.
i. To understand the workflow among interdepartmental (cashier, lab, pharmacy, FO
and clinical teams)
j. To understand the medications and medical items
k. To know the confidential and patient safety concepts
2. IPD
a. Perform Basic Life Support
b. Complete admission documentation and admission procedures
c. Measure and record client’s weight and height.
d. Take and record vital signs.
e. Assists collecting specimens.
f. Understand and perform the basic nursing cares (dusting, bed making, position
change, Ryle tube feeding, breast feeding, Tapid sponging,
g. Understand and perform the neonate care.
h. Understand and perform the chart file arrangement systematically.
i. Understand and perform the medical devices (infusion pump, flow meter)
j. Assists in Nursing care (wound dressing, cannular insertion, drip infusions)
