Day 4

1) The document describes a science lesson plan on calculating speed for 7th grade students. 2) The lesson includes objectives, content on speed calculation, learning activities like a fun run to gather speed data, and examples of speed calculations. 3) Students are taught that speed is calculated by dividing the distance an object travels by the time it takes, and they practice using this equation to determine the speeds of runners in a group activity and solve example problems.

IV. PROCEDURES
A. Preparatory Prayer

B. Motivational

Are these familiar to you?

speedometer
where these commonly found?
Cars and motorcycles, other vehicles etc.
What are these things for?
Device Used to measure speed
There are different ways to measure speed,
using a device or it can be done through calculation.

Can you recall the equation for speed?

v=d/t
v=speed
d=distance
t=time
We can use this equation to determine the speed of an object.
Do you want to measure how fast you are? Yes
So, I want you to perform this activity

C. Activity
Group the class into 5 groups. Let them perform the activity.
Fun Run
(time allotment 10 min)

Objective: To be able to gather data to determine who runs fastest.

Materials: stopwatch, meter stick
Procedure:
1. Start by choosing a spacious place to walk straight.
Situation 1 2. Select three members in your group to participate for the raising.
3. Mark on the ground the starting line. All participants must start from the starting line at
the same time.
4. Upon receiving the go signal, all participants must start to run as fast as they could. The
other members should observe closely as the participants run and collect the data.

Runner’s Distance Time SPEED

Name (m) (s) m/s

Situation 2

Each group will report the result to the class.

They will be graded base on the given rubric.
D. Analysis Q1. Who runs the fastest? How much is his/her speed?
Q2. How much distance did he/she covers? How much is the Time?
Q4. How did you combine these quantities to determine how fast is runner? We divided
the distance travelled by the time of travel.
Speed=distance/time
E. Abstraction
CALCULATION OF SPEED: To calculate the speed of an object, it can be written
operationally as,
Speed = distance/time Average speed
(Vave)= Total distance travelled /Total time of travel
Wherein, The SI unit of speed is meters per second (m/s), but other units of
speed such as kilometers per hour (km/h) or mile per hour (mph) are sometimes
used.

Below is table that shows fundamental or basic quantities such as Distance and Time with
their corresponding units.

Important:( students should already be familiar with converting between metric units.)

For example
Situation 1: How much speed did the man take from the reference point to the first stop?
Given:
d=6m
s=3s
v=?
v=d/t
=6m/3s
=2m/s
therefore, the man
has a speed of 2m/s.

Situation 2: The man does not have a constant speed, he has an average speed. To
calculate average speed, divide the total distance travelled from the reference point to
the (first stop to the second stop) by the total time .
 Vave = Total distance travelled/ Total time of travel

Given: Total distance= 6m+7m=13m

Total time= 3s+2s=5s
Vave=?
Vave = d/ t
=13m/5s
=2.6m/s
The average speed of the man is 2.6 m/s from the Total distance he covered divided
by the total time.
F. Application Problem solving: How to be on time?
Scenario:
You always arrived late in school, because your house is 30km away. Every day
you have to travel for 1.15hrs by a jeepney.

1. How much speed you have taken everyday from your house to school by a
jeepney? 26.09km/h
2. Now you know how much speed you covered going to school, what would
you do to arrive on time?
Ride a vehicle that is faster than the jeepney.
G. Practical
Applications of In real life Calculation of Speed is very important to determine how much speed
we need to cover to make our work faster. We travel fast to arrive on time.

Skills in Daily
Living
H. Generalization Calculating Speed
A measurement of distance can tell you how far an object travels.
If you know the distance an object travels in a certain amount of time, you can
calculate the speed of an object.
Speed (a scalar) is the rate of motion. It is a type of rate. A rate tells you the
amount of something that occurs or changes in one unit of time. The speed of an
object is the distance the object travels per unit of time.
To calculate the speed of an object, it can be written operationally as, Speed =
distance/time Average speed
(Vave)= Total distance travelled Total time of travel
I. Evaluation Solve the given problems below. Show your solution

1. A man walks 25 km in 6 hours. Find the speed of the man?

Solution:
Given:
d= 25 km
t = 6 hours
v=?
v=d/t
= 25km/6h
= 4.16 km/h
Therefore, a man travels at a speed of 4.16 km/h
2. A car covers a distance of 420 m in 30 seconds. Find the speed?
Solution:
Given:
d=420m
T=30s
= 420m/30 sec
= 14 m/sec
Therefore, the car travels at a speed of 14m/s.

J. Additional As you go home, find out how much speed you will going to take from school to
activities for your house. Write your answer in a ½ sheet of paper.
