Ligneous rocks
Rocks that are formed when molten magma cools are called igneous rocks.
Rocks with small crystals cooled more quickly. Than rocks with larger crystals.
If the magma cools very quickly then no crystals are formed. An example of an igneous rock is
granite.
Sedimentary rocks
Rocks formed from layers of particles settling on top of one another and being pressed down
are called sedimentary rocks. Small grains can be seen in the rock. These rocks often contain
fossils and are porous. An example of this type of rock is limestone.
Metamorphic rocks
Metamorphic rocks are formed from other types of rocks that are subjected to a lot of heat
and pressure underground. Metamorphic rocks are harder than sedimentary rocks. An example
of a metamorphic rock is marble.
Moving rocks
Rock fragments are carried by river and streams. The distance they travel depends on the slow
of the ground, the speed of water in the river and how heavy the fragments are. The heaviest
fragments can only be carried a short distance. Smaller, lighter fragments are carried a long
way. The sand and mud may get carried to the sea. The layers of sand and mud build up over
millions of years and the fragments are squashed together by the layer on top. This forms
sedimentary rock.
Word
Crust the outer layer of the Earth
Deposition when eroded rock fragments settle
Fossils the remains of plants and animals from millions of years ago
Gains small fragments of rock
Geologist Scientific term for someone who studies rocks.
Granite a type of igneous rock
Humus the remains and products of living things found in the soil
Igneous rock rock formed when ash or molten magma from inside the Earth cools and
becomes solid
Lava molten rock (magma) emerging onto the Earth's surface
Limestone a type of sedimentary rock formed from grains of calcium carbonate,
from the shells of animals
Magma molten rock from below the Earth's crust
Mantle the laver of molten rock below the crust of the Earth
Metamorphic rock a type of rock formed when other rocks are subjected to heat and
pressure underground
Meteorites fragments of rock that fall on the Earth from space
Minerals substances that make up rock, for example mica and quartz; each
mineral is made of one type of chemical
Molten in a liquid state
Porous allows water to pass through it
Sand a type of large particle found in soil
Sandstone a type of sedimentary rock formed when grains of sand were pressed
together
Sedimentary rock rocks formed by layers of sediment being squashed together over
millions of years
Weathering wear on rocks caused by rain, wind, frost and temperature changes
