Lec 03 Theromodynamic Processes (Autosaved)

This document discusses four important thermodynamic processes: constant-volume, constant-pressure, constant-temperature, and constant-entropy. It provides descriptions of each process and assignments for calculating work, internal energy, heat transfer, enthalpy change, and entropy change. Additionally, it covers the Carnot cycle, which is a theoretically reversible heat engine composed of four processes: reversible isothermal expansion, reversible adiabatic expansion, reversible isothermal compression, and reversible adiabatic compression. The topic covered includes these four thermodynamic processes and calculations, as well as the Carnot engine.

Ideal-Gas Processes

There are an infinite variety of processes. The four important non-flow

processes commonly dealt in engineering applications are as follows:

1. Constant-volume process or isochoric

2. Constant-pressure process or isobaric
3. Constant-temperature process or isothermal
4. Constant-entropy process or adiabatic

Assignment 1

Make a chart for all the four thermodynamic processes containing following calculations:
1. Work done during each process
2. Change of internal energy during each process
3. Heat transfer during each process
4. Change of enthalpy during each process
5. Change of entropy during each process

Carnot Cycle or Carnot Engine
A French engineer, Sadi Carnot, in 1824 proposed an engine which works on a
reversible cycle. It is theoretically a heat engine that converts the maximum amount
of energy into mechanical work.

The Carnot cycle, also called reversible cycle,

comprises of four reversible processes as given:

1. Reversible isothermal expansion,

2. Reversible adiabatic (isentropic) expansion,
3. Reversible isothermal compression, and
4. Reversible adiabatic (isentropic)
compression.

University of Dhaka 9
Topic covered

1. Four Thermodynamic processes with calculation of various parameters

2. Carnot engine with efficiency calculation.
