02 - Mean, Median, Mode From Frequency Table

This lesson plan outlines a mathematics lesson on statistics and cumulative frequency for an 11th grade class. The objectives are for students to generate formulas for finding the mean from a frequency table and to investigate finding the median and modal class. Key concepts that will be covered include cumulative frequency, boundaries, frequency distributions, and calculating the mean, median, and mode of grouped data. Students will watch an explanatory video, work through sample exam questions, and discuss steps for solving problems on central tendencies using frequency tables.

Content Summary:

What is cumulative frequency?

Cumulative frequency is the total of a frequency and all frequencies in a

frequency distribution until a certain defined class interval. The running
total of frequencies starting from the first frequency till the end frequency
is the cumulative frequency. The name given to the generic shape of the

cumulative frequency curve is Ogive.

Cumulative frequency graphs (or cumulative frequency diagrams) are

useful when representing or analyzing the distribution of large, grouped
data sets. They can also be used to find estimates for the median value, the
lower quartile, and the upper quartile for the data set.

How to complete the cumulative table?

On the cumulative table we need the upper-class boundaries and

cumulative frequency.

How to complete the cumulative frequency?

Cumulative frequency is continuous addition.
Upper class boundaries are the upper-class limit + 0.5
Key Terms

1. Class Limit: The lower limit for every class is the smallest value in

that class. On the other hand, the upper limit for every class is the
greatest value in that class.

2. Class Boundaries: Class boundaries are the numbers used to

separate classes. The size of the gap between classes is the
difference between the upper-class limit of one class and the lower-
class limit of the next class. In this case, gap = 15 – 14 = 1.
Gap = 1
The lower boundary of each class is calculated by subtracting half of
1
the gap value =0.52 from the class lower limit. On the other hand,
2
the upper boundary of each class is calculated by adding half of the
1
gap value =0.5to the class upper limit.
2

Class Width: This is the difference between the Upper class limit and the
Lower class limit of a class interval.

How do we find the mean of grouped data?

To calculate the mean of grouped data, the first step is to determine the
midpoint of each interval or class. These midpoints must then be multiplied by
the frequencies of the corresponding classes. The sum of the products divided
by the total number of values will be the value of the mean.

How do you find the median class of grouped data?

In a grouped data, it is not possible to find the median for the given
observation by looking at the cumulative frequencies. The middle value of
the given data will be in some class interval. So, it is necessary to find the
value inside the class interval that divides the whole distribution into two
halves. In this scenario, we must find the median class.

To find the median class, we must find the cumulative frequencies of all the
classes and n/2. After that, locate the class whose cumulative frequency is
greater than (nearest to) n/2. The class is called the median class.

How do we find the Modal class of grouped data?

The modal class of a grouped frequency distribution is the class or classes

with the highest frequency.

Engage/Explore:

Students will be asked a series of questions in preparation of a video that will

be presented on grouped data:
1. What is meant by mode in mathematics?
2. How do you think we are going to find it from a grouped frequency
table?
3. What is median in mathematics?
4. How do we find the median in an ungrouped dataset?
5. What is the mean of a dataset?
6. What is the formula for the mean of a dataset?

Students will be presented with a video explaining the concept of finding the
median of the 3 main measures of central tendencies.

Explain/ Elaborate:

Students will be presented with a cxc past paper question which will test their
understanding of what was presented within the video.
Teacher will allow the students to state how we go about finding the mean,
mode, and median of the frequency table and the reason for each step taken.

(May 2021)
One Hundred Students were surveyed on the amount of money they spent on
data for their cellphones during the week. The table below shows the results for
each interval.

60< x ≤70 11
70< x ≤80 31
80< x ≤ 90 29
90< x ≤ 100 22

Using the table,

i. Determine the modal class of the amount of the amount of money
spent.
(1 Mark)
ii. Calculate the estimate of the mean amount of money spent, given
your answer to 2 decimal places.
(2 Marks)
iii. Damion reports that the median amount of money spent is $84.
Briefly explain why Damion’s report could be correct.
