1. The document appears to be an experiment report for testing a printed circuit board (PCB). 2. It outlines the aim, prerequisites, objectives, required components, and theory behind testing a PCB, including visual inspection, cold testing, power-on testing, opens testing, and shorts testing. 3. The procedures describe performing the listed tests on a sample PCB using a digital multi-meter, recording any open paths or shorts found, and drawing a conclusion.

Experiment No: 01

Name of the Experiment: Testing of PCB.

Submitted on: 27/07/2021

Aim: To perform bare board testing of PCB.

Pre-requisite: Familiarity of the electronic components and knowledge of handling Digital

Multi Meter (DMM).

Objective:
1. To identify different components mounted on PCB.
2. To carry out various tests on the PCB.

Components and equipment required:

PCB and DMM

Theory:
Any electronic product even if properly designed and built with utmost care is prone to bug
and issues. It is very crucial to test the product or PCB thoroughly in early stages of design to
save redevelopment time and cost. The testing can be done at PCB design level wherein after
using various design analysis techniques like EMI, Signal Integrity and Power Integrity, the
design issues can be minimized. But still there is a need to check a bare-board PCB obtained
after components population or assembly has been done. This checking throws light on the

issues like if shorts, open or bad soldier joints are present. It also makes sure current capacity,
performance; component value and impedance are within proper and expected tolerance level.

After, fabrication and assembly of the PCB, the following tests are conducted on the PCB:

• Visual checking - The PCB is inspected visually to verify the correct placement of
components.
• Cold test - Cold test refers to testing the power supply connectivity without power on.
During the cold test, the PCB traces between regulated output and ground are checked for
non-zero impedance.
• Power-on test - The PCB is powered on and the regulated output from power supplies are
tested for the specified rating.
• Opens Test - This is done to make sure there is current flow from one node to the next,
for every net on the board, by measuring the resistance of the conductor.
• Shorts Test - This is done to check sure there is no current flow between separate nets.
This process is done by measuring the resistance between them.

Procedure:
Perform the above tests on a sample PCB using DMM.

Observations:

No. of open paths found:

No. of shorts found:

Conclusion:

Post Lab Questions:

1. Describe loop back testing for development board.
