Structure of An Atom

1. Atomic structure can be explained using quantum models of the atom and the wave-particle duality of light. Photons behave as both waves and particles. 2. Rutherford's gold foil experiment showed that the Thomson model of the atom, with a uniform positive charge and electrons embedded in it, was incorrect. Most alpha particles passed through the foil with small deflections, but some rebounded, indicating the positive charge must be concentrated in a small nucleus. 3. Quantum models such as the Bohr model improved on explanations of atomic structure by incorporating Planck's quantum hypothesis and explaining observations like line spectra. However, the dual wave-particle nature of light and matter is still not fully understood.
