“Very good!” their beliefs are highly associated with the
environment where they are living. The video also
After the typhoon? provided list on how to identify if a settlement is a
“Very good!” civilization. The war is also prevalent maybe
because the lack of water resources in the area is
one of the great factor why both parties are
fighting to each other.
B. Analysis

In relation to that our lesson for today is all about

the place where the first civilization takes place.

There are some of ancient settlement did not

considered by some of the historians as
civilization and one of the example of this is the
ancient city of Jericho. Though this city have built
walls to protect their city against external treat like
those people who steal their food, and their
livestock but why they are still not recognize as
civilization.

What do you think the answer guys?

But before we answer that we should define first

what does the word “Civilization” mean.

According to Violatti (2004) It is commonly used

to describe human societies "with a high level of
cultural and technological development".

According to the National Geographic (2018),

Civilization describes a complex way of life that
came about as people began to develop networks
of urban settlements.

Historians have provided common characteristics

of civilization which are:
(1) large population centers;
(2) monumental architecture and unique art
styles;
(3) shared communication strategies;
4) systems for administering territories;
(5) a complex division of labor; and
(6) The division of people into social and
economic classes.

To answer the question above: Jericho did not

recognized as civilization because there are no
communication devices like writing, language,
written text or an evidence that are they possess
a system of writing or they started communicating
(The students will read and answers some
questions)

Further, the Mesopotamia or “The Land Between

Two Rivers” is the earliest civilization that so far
have been considered by the historian. In present
day this place is in the boundaries of Iraq, Iran
and short portion of Arabian Plateau. As you can
observe, the early settlements like in
Mesopotamia is located in the river banks the
main reason for this is that these places are rich
in “silt” or a natural fertilizer that is good for
farming. That’s why most of the people are
settling beside the river because it can support
their agriculture.

This civilization also has an excellent architecture

that we call “The Ziggurat” it has two main
function:
1. The place where the priest and priestess
perform their rituals. Often times the rituals are
done to please their gods through offering
animals, bloods, and even humans if the drought
is really severe.
2. It is also the place for their trade. At this time
they don’t possess the idea of coinage but they
perform barter exchange where people change
their goods for the goods that is not present in
their area.

Mesopotamia is also the home of the greatest

political leader in ancient times. Kings like
Hammurabi and Sargon who greatly contributed
for the prosperity and advancement of the region.

1) Sargon I
The person who hailed as the first emperor
in the world because he was able to unite
several city states in Mesopotamia.

2) Hammurabi
He was famous for his 282 codes that
dictates the fate of the criminal if he
committed one of his laws.

C. Abstraction

How can we consider if the settlement is a Historians have provided the 6 characteristics of
civilized or not? civilization that can be used as a guidelines in
considering settlement a civilized one or not.
“That’s right! Very Good!”

Why it is important for the early people to live Because it produces silt or a natural fertilizer that
near the river banks? good for their farming venture
“Very Good!”

What are the two functions of Ziggurat in ancient It has two functions, Sir.
Mesopotamia? 1. It is the place for rituals to please their gods
“Very Good!” 2. It is also a market place where people
exchanges their goods.
Using the Venn Diagram below, can you name
the city-states that flourished in Mesopotamia and
